Leak testing

Leak testing proves that a weld, a joint or a whole system is tight before it holds product. The method is chosen by how small a leak matters: a soapy-film bubble test is ample for a tank floor weld, while helium mass spectrometer testing finds leaks orders of magnitude smaller in vacuum systems and critical components.

Methods

  • Vacuum box bubble testing: tank floor welds, shell-to-bottom welds and lap welds, with a solution applied and a box drawing vacuum over the weld.
  • Direct pressure bubble testing: reinforcing pads, nozzles and small enclosures.
  • Pressure-change (pressure decay) testing: closed systems where a leak rate is specified.
  • Helium mass spectrometer testing: sniffer, hood or tracer probe techniques for high sensitivity.

Leak testing is not pressure testing

A hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure test proves strength and tightness at test pressure under the construction code. A leak test proves tightness to a stated sensitivity. Many projects need both, and the inspection and test plan sets which applies where.

How we deliver it

Leak testing is carried out to a written procedure approved for the scope, naming the code and edition, the equipment and calibration, the coverage and the acceptance criteria. The procedure and each technician’s certification are submitted for the client’s review before mobilisation.

Work is planned and supervised by ASNT Level III personnel; our founder holds ASNT NDT Level III in UT, RT, MT, PT and VT. Reports state the coverage achieved and any limitations, so the engineer reading them knows what was examined and what was not, and any reportable finding is raised the same day.

Governing codes and standards

  • ASME Section V, Article 10 (leak testing) and its mandatory appendices
  • API 650 and API 653 (vacuum box testing of tank bottom welds)
  • ASME B31.3 para. 345 (leak testing of piping)

What you receive

  • Test procedure and record with sensitivity, pressures and duration
  • Leak locations and retest results

Industries served

  • Storage tanks
  • Refining and petrochemical
  • Power generation
  • Vacuum and process equipment

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a leak test and a hydrotest?

A hydrotest proves strength and tightness at test pressure under the construction code; a leak test proves tightness to a stated sensitivity. The inspection and test plan states which is required.
