Butt Weld
A butt weld is a weld in a butt joint, joining two components edge-to-edge in approximately the same plane, with groove preparation (V, U, J) that allows full-penetration welding from one or both sides.
Definition
Butt welds are amenable to volumetric NDT (RT, UT, PAUT, TOFD) because the groove geometry presents the flaws to the inspection method without geometric noise. Most code-required full-penetration weld NDT applies to butt welds.
What it is
A joint between two members lying approximately in the same plane, with weld metal filling a prepared groove between them. It is the configuration most volumetric examination and most acceptance criteria are written around.
Correct use
Preparation geometry drives which flaws are likely and which techniques will find them: bevel angle governs side-wall fusion risk and the angle at which ultrasonic beams strike the fusion face; root configuration governs penetration defects and the geometry signals that examination must distinguish from flaws.

ASME Section IX for the welding procedure; ASME Section VIII, B31.3, AWS D1.1 and API 1104 for acceptance depending on the construction code; ASME Section V for the examination itself.
The usual mistake
Applying a technique qualified on one bevel geometry to another. The beam angles that interrogate a thirty-degree bevel do not necessarily interrogate a narrow-gap preparation.
