ISO 9712 Audit Preparation for Inspection Companies
A ISO 9712 audit runs in 6 stages, beginning with select a certification body accredited to iso/iec 17024 for the iso 9712.. ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 135, Non-destructive testing, Subcommittee SC 7, Personnel qualification, in collaboration with CEN/TC 138 under the Vienna Agreement. Operationally the authority is the certification body running the scheme, which must operate to ISO/IEC 17024.
ISO 9712 specifies requirements for the qualification and certification of personnel who perform industrial non-destructive testing. The fifth edition, ISO 9712:2021, was published in December 2021 and cancels and replaces ISO 9712:2012, which it technically revised — clarifying responsibilities for the certification body, authorized qualification body, examination centre and employer, revising training and industrial experience durations, modifying visual acuity testing, adding requirements for renewal candidates, and revising the structured credit system for Level 3 recertification. Its Scope notes that it specifies requirements for what are in effect third-party conformity assessment schemes. For a service provider this changes the shape of a bid: certificates belong to certification bodies and to individuals, not to the company. What separates firms that clear an audit from firms that collect findings is not the quality of the documentation but whether it describes what actually happens. The finding recorded most often is: Bidding an ISO 9712 scope with employer-based SNT-TC-1A certificates and assuming they will be accepted

Note on the normative reference: ISO 9712:2021 cites ISO/IEC 17024:2012 as a dated reference, while ISO/IEC 17024:2026 was published on 1 April 2026 — ANAB has published transition milestones of 1 October 2027 for certification body self-attestation, assessments from October 2027 to September 2028, and 31 March 2029 as the final deadline. Checked August 2026.
| Stage | What happens | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Select a certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 for the ISO 9712 scheme — or the national identical adoption the. | Where the paperwork is tested against itself |
| Stage 2 | Submit application and eligibility evidence: training duration, supervised industrial experience by sector, and vision (Clause 7) | Where the paperwork is tested against practice |
| Stage 3 | Sit the examinations at an examination centre approved by the certification body — general, specific, practical and instruction writing elements. | Where the paperwork is tested against practice |
| Stage 4 | Certification decision taken by the certification body alone (Clause 9); the certification body owns the certificate and controls suspension and. | Where the paperwork is tested against practice |
| Stage 5 | Employer delivers job-specific training and issues the operating authorization before the person works on the employer's products | Where the paperwork is tested against practice |
| Stage 6 | Renew under Clause 10 before expiry; recertify under Clause 11, using the Annex C structured credit system where the scheme. | Where the paperwork is tested against practice |
| Renewal | Certificates carry a defined validity period, with renewal handled under Clause 10 and recertification under Clause 11. European Accreditation states that ISO 9712 certificates expire at the end of a maximum period of validity of five years, that renewal may be applied for up to 12 months after the expiry date, and that an application for recertification made more than 12 months after expiry requires a complete examination. Where the standard allows latitude, the certification body has the final decision, so the operative numbers come from the scheme rules, not from a universal figure. In the Americas: ASNT 9712 certificates run five years; Canada operates CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 (ISO 9712:2021, IDT) with its own Rules of Implementation; Brazil's SNQC-END operates under ABENDI's NA-001. | Diarised from the certificate date, not the last audit |
How long does ISO 9712 audit preparation take?
Document work — the written practice, procedures and quality manual — takes weeks. What cannot be compressed is documented experience and records history: on-the-job hours accrue in real time, and calibration and certification history cannot be back-filled. Firms that start when the audit is scheduled rather than announced clear it without findings.
What does ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 135, Non-destructive testing, Subcommittee SC 7, Personnel qualification, in collaboration with CEN/TC 138 under the Vienna Agreement. Operationally the authority is the certification body running the scheme, which must operate to ISO/IEC 17024. In the Americas: ASNT Certification Services LLC (ASNT 9712 / ANSI/ASNT CP-9712) in the United States; Natural Resources Canada's National NDT Certification Body (NDTCB) under CAN/CGSB-48.9712 in Canada; ABENDI's SNQC-END, accredited by Inmetro, in Brazil. look at first?
Records, not manuals. A manual states intent; records show practice. The usual opening move is to take a completed job and trace it back to the technician's certification, the instrument's calibration, the approved procedure and the report — and see whether all four reconcile.
What are the most common ISO 9712 findings?
Bidding an ISO 9712 scope with employer-based SNT-TC-1A certificates and assuming they will be accepted, Certificate sector under Annex A does not match the work — a sector-limited certificate used across pre-service and in-service scopes, Certificate lapsed and the renewal window missed, converting a renewal into a complete re-examination, No employer operating authorization on file, so a validly certified technician still cannot be shown as authorised for the client's product. Almost all of them are evidence problems rather than capability problems: the work was done correctly and the proof was not kept, or was kept somewhere the firm could not retrieve during the audit.
Can a consultant attend the ISO 9712 audit?
Yes, and it changes the outcome. Someone who has sat through the same audit at other firms answers in the auditor's own terms, produces the right record without a search, and stops a clarification turning into a finding. The firm still owns every answer — the consultant does not speak for it.
What happens after a ISO 9712 finding?
A corrective action with a deadline, and evidence of closure at the next audit. Repeat findings are treated far more seriously than first ones, because they show the corrective-action system itself is not working.
Does ISO 9712 require a pre-audit or gap assessment?
Not as a requirement, but the arithmetic favours it: a gap assessment finds the same evidence problems the auditor would, without the finding attached, and while there is still time to fix them. Firms entering their first ISO 9712 audit blind typically collect findings that a sampling exercise would have caught.
What the auditor asks to see
- Application to the certification body or authorized qualification body naming method, level and industrial or product sector (Annex A)
- Documented training from a source the certification body recognises, meeting the durations in Clause 7.2
- Employer-attested industrial NDT experience performed under supervision in the method and sector (Clause 7.3)
- Vision evidence meeting Clause 7.4 — near vision acuity and colour vision, with ISO 18490 as the normative reference for evaluating visual acuity
- Examination results for the general, specific, practical and NDT instruction writing elements at Levels 1 and 2, or the basic and main method elements at Level 3 (Clause 8)
- The certificate issued by the certification body, showing scope and expiry (Clause 9.2)
- The employer's written operating authorization, issued after job-specific training on the employer's products and procedures
- Renewal and recertification file, including Annex C structured credit system records where that route is used
Findings to close before the audit
- Bidding an ISO 9712 scope with employer-based SNT-TC-1A certificates and assuming they will be accepted
- Certificate sector under Annex A does not match the work — a sector-limited certificate used across pre-service and in-service scopes
- Certificate lapsed and the renewal window missed, converting a renewal into a complete re-examination
- No employer operating authorization on file, so a validly certified technician still cannot be shown as authorised for the client's product
- Vision evidence required of certificate holders under Clause 7.4 not maintained by the employer between examinations
- Assuming reciprocity between national adoptions — NRCan states that adopting ISO 9712:2021 as CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 synchronises the published standards but does not by itself provide full harmonisation or mutual recognition of other certification schemes
- Practical examination technique on the certificate narrower than the technique the job actually requires
- Certification body chosen whose ISO/IEC 17024 accreditation does not cover the ISO 9712 scheme, or does not cover the specific method
