NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in South Australia
The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is what Atlantis built as the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and South Australia is a state where that kind of practice has a clear job to do. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician opens a job in a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, sets up the technique, carries out the inspection, records the indications and receives a score when the job is closed. South Australian inspection work spans an unusual range for a state of under two million people: naval shipbuilding at Osborne on the Lefevre Peninsula, which is being expanded to build nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS; copper and uranium processing at Olympic Dam; gas processing at Moomba in the Cooper Basin and the liquids plant at Port Bonython; steelmaking at Whyalla; lead and zinc smelting at Port Pirie; defence aviation at RAAF Base Edinburgh; and a growing fleet of wind farms, transmission lines and hydrogen projects. Practical NDT gives trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs a place to put hours into the methods that work needs without booking a bench, a reference block or a radiation area.
This page is the South Australia hub. It maps where the state's NDT work is, which simulator environments suit each region, how simulator practice sits alongside AINDT certification and the EPA's radiation licensing, and how to arrange a demo. Practical NDT is practice. It is not a certification and it does not replace a practical examination on real specimens under any scheme.
South Australia's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: South Australia's NDT work clusters in five areas: the Port Adelaide and Lefevre Peninsula defence shipbuilding precinct; metropolitan Adelaide's fabrication, defence aerospace and power assets; the Upper Spencer Gulf industrial triangle of Whyalla, Port Pirie and Port Augusta; the Far North mining and gas fields around Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, Carrapateena and Moomba; and the renewable energy and transmission build-out across the regions.
Osborne and the Lefevre Peninsula. The Osborne Naval Shipyard is the centre of Australian naval shipbuilding. The keel of the first Hunter class frigate was laid there in August 2026, with most of the first ship's blocks already in construction, and the site is being enlarged for SSN-AUKUS submarine construction from the 2030s. That means a sustained demand for weld inspection on thick structural steel: ultrasonic and phased array examination of butt and fillet welds, magnetic particle and penetrant testing on fabricated assemblies, visual inspection at every stage, and radiography where the code or the drawing calls for it. Defence work is controlled to demanding quality requirements, and the supply chain of fabricators, machinists and coating contractors around Port Adelaide and Osborne inherits those requirements.
Metropolitan Adelaide. The northern suburbs host RAAF Base Edinburgh, home to maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft, and the Edinburgh Parks and Salisbury defence and electronics precinct. Torrens Island and Pelican Point gas-fired power stations, water and wastewater assets, and the structural and pressure-equipment fabrication shops of Wingfield, Regency Park and Lonsdale provide steady inspection work. Adelaide no longer has an operating oil refinery, so its process-plant work is centred on fuel terminals, power plant boilers and heat exchangers, and industrial gas and chemical sites.
The Upper Spencer Gulf. Whyalla's integrated steelworks has been in administration since early 2025, its blast furnace has been offline since April 2026 and a closure of the furnace was announced in September 2026, while the state and federal governments run a sale process and plan a lower-emissions rebuild. Whatever form the site takes next, it will involve large amounts of plant demolition, refurbishment and new fabrication, all of which bring inspection. Port Pirie hosts a large lead and multi-metals smelter, and Port Augusta is the hub for transmission, solar and wind projects in the region. Port Bonython near Whyalla receives liquids from the Cooper Basin for processing and export.
The Far North. Olympic Dam, near Roxby Downs, is one of the world's largest deposits of copper and uranium, with an underground mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery and hydrometallurgical plant. Prominent Hill and Carrapateena add further copper operations. Moomba, in the Cooper Basin, is the processing hub for South Australian gas and liquids, connected by long pipelines to Adelaide, Sydney and Port Bonython. These remote sites run on fly-in fly-out rosters, and their inspection programmes include corrosion monitoring on piping and vessels, tank inspection, heat exchanger tube testing, alloy verification and structural weld inspection on mills, crushers and conveyors.
Regional energy and agriculture. Wind farms in the Mid North and on the Eyre and Yorke peninsulas, large batteries, new interconnector transmission lines and planned hydrogen projects bring structural steel, tower flange and bolted-connection inspection. Wine, grain and food processing across the Barossa, Riverland and Limestone Coast use pressure vessels, boilers and storage tanks that need periodic in-service inspection under work health and safety law.
Practical NDT by city and region in South Australia
Short answer: South Australia does not yet have a city-level Practical NDT page, so this hub covers the whole state. Adelaide has an Atlantis ASNT training page, linked below. The table matches each South Australian cluster to the simulator environments and methods that fit its work.
| City or region | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Adelaide (metro) | Defence aerospace, power stations, fabrication, fuel terminals, water | NDT Lab, Welding Workshop, Aircraft Hangar; UT, MT, PT, VT, ET |
| Osborne and Port Adelaide | Frigate construction, submarine yard expansion, marine fabrication | Welding Workshop; PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, RT, VT |
| Whyalla | Steelmaking, plant refurbishment, port, liquids plant at Port Bonython | Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; UT, MT, MFL, PMI |
| Port Pirie and Port Augusta | Lead and multi-metals smelting, transmission, solar and wind | Oil & Gas Site, NDT Lab; UT, MT, PT, PMI, VT |
| Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, Carrapateena | Copper and uranium mining, smelting and refining | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, Welding Workshop; UT, PAUT, IRIS, PMI, MFL |
| Moomba and the Cooper Basin | Gas processing, liquids, pipelines | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; UT, LRUT, IRIS, PMI, RT |
Adelaide. Technicians in Adelaide work across the widest mix in the state: shop inspection at structural and pressure-equipment fabricators, boiler and heat exchanger work at the gas-fired power stations, tank and pipework inspection at fuel terminals, and component work linked to defence aviation. A trainee joining an Adelaide inspection company can begin with guided NDT Lab lessons on reference blocks before moving to Welding Workshop jobs. Employers who need ASNT SNT-TC-1A personnel can see ASNT training for Adelaide.
Osborne and Port Adelaide. Shipyard inspection is weld inspection at scale. Thick plate butt welds, T-joints and complex block connections suit PAUT and TOFD practice in the Welding Workshop, along with MT on fillet welds and VT at fit-up and after welding. Inspectors who move between the frigate programme and supply-chain fabricators can use the simulator to keep sizing and characterisation consistent between jobs.
Whyalla. The steelworks transition will mean structural assessment of existing plant, refurbishment and new-build fabrication, alongside port, rail and liquids-plant work at Port Bonython. Welding Workshop jobs build weld inspection skills, while Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank jobs suit tank and pipework surveys on process and storage assets.
Port Pirie and Port Augusta. Smelter maintenance brings corrosion and wear surveys, alloy checks on replacement components and weld inspection on repairs. Port Augusta's transmission and renewable projects add structural steel and bolted-connection inspection. NDT Lab and Oil & Gas Site jobs cover the core methods.
Olympic Dam and the copper province. Mining and metallurgical plants combine structural inspection on mills and conveyors with process-plant inspection on vessels, tanks, piping and heat exchangers. IRIS on exchanger tubes and PMI on alloy piping are especially useful refreshers for FIFO technicians who meet them only during shutdowns.
Moomba and the Cooper Basin. Gas processing plants and long-distance pipelines rely on corrosion monitoring, weld inspection on tie-ins and repairs, tank surveys and guided-wave screening of pipe runs. The Oil & Gas Site environment, with LRUT screening and IRIS tube inspection, matches this work closely.
Environments and methods that match South Australian work
Short answer: the Welding Workshop fits Osborne and the fabrication supply chain; the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank fit Moomba, Port Bonython, Olympic Dam and the smelters; the Aircraft Hangar fits defence aviation around Edinburgh; and the NDT Lab is where every trainee starts.
The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five workplace environments and twelve methods. In the NDT Lab a technician works on bench specimens and reference blocks, building calibration habits, probe handling and signal interpretation before meeting real geometry. The Welding Workshop holds weld coupons and fabrication joints, with jobs in UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT, PT and VT. The Aircraft Hangar covers airframe and component inspection, especially ET, PT and UT. The Oil & Gas Site puts weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice into a process plant setting. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank.
The twelve methods are grouped as surface (PT, MT, VT), volumetric (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT), electromagnetic (ET, MFL) and specialised (LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI alloy verification). There are 33 guided lessons, and the job library includes 52 NDT Lab jobs, 52 Welding Workshop jobs, 54 Aircraft Hangar jobs and 73 Oil & Gas Site jobs.
For South Australia, the mapping looks like this. Shipbuilding and defence fabrication lean on PAUT and TOFD for full-penetration welds in thick sections, MT for fillet and attachment welds, and VT throughout; the Welding Workshop is the main environment. Gas processing and pipelines need UT corrosion mapping, LRUT screening, IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI on alloy piping and RT on welds; the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments carry those jobs. Mining and metallurgy mix both: weld and structural inspection on mills, kilns and conveyors, and process-plant inspection on leach tanks, thickeners and acid plant equipment. Power generation needs boiler tube and exchanger work, so IRIS and UT thickness surveys are valuable. Defence aviation relies on eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic inspection of components, which the Aircraft Hangar environment covers.
Because the jobs are scored, a technician can repeat the same scenario until the result is consistent, then move on to harder variations. That is useful in a state where a technician may spend months on one kind of work and then be asked to switch, for example from shipyard weld inspection to a shutdown at a mining or gas plant.
Regulators and requirements South Australian technicians meet
Short answer: in South Australia, industrial radiography is licensed by the Environment Protection Authority under the Radiation Protection and Control Act 2021; pressure equipment, plant and workplace safety fall under the Work Health and Safety Act and SafeWork SA; and most NDT personnel are certified through AINDT, whose scheme is based on ISO 9712. Practical NDT is practice for whichever scheme a technician works under.
Radiation. The EPA administers the Radiation Protection and Control Act 2021 and the Radiation Protection and Control Regulations 2022, which adopt ARPANSA codes and standards. People who operate X-ray apparatus or sealed sources for industrial radiography need an EPA licence, and the EPA's guidance points to certification in NDT radiography and radiation safety from a provider endorsed by the AINDT Certification Board, or an EPA radiation examination, as supporting evidence. Businesses that possess sources also need registration and a radiation management plan. Simulator RT practice involves no radiation at all, so it sits entirely outside this licensing, and it is no substitute for the licence or the safety training.
Plant and pressure equipment. South Australia applies the model Work Health and Safety laws, administered by SafeWork SA. Pressure vessels and boilers are plant, with design and item registration requirements for certain hazard levels, and in-service inspection is normally carried out to AS/NZS 3788. Design and fabrication usually reference AS 1210 for pressure vessels, AS 4037 for examination and testing, AS/NZS 1554 for structural welding and AS 4041 for pressure piping. Confirm current registration requirements with SafeWork SA for any specific item.
Pipelines and petroleum. Onshore pipelines in the state are designed, built and operated to AS 2885, and petroleum and pipeline activities are regulated by the state's Department for Energy and Mining under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000. Offshore activities in Commonwealth waters fall under NOPSEMA.
Defence. Naval shipbuilding follows defence and classification-society requirements on top of Australian standards, and prime contractors set their own qualification rules for inspectors on their programmes.
Certification. AINDT certification, aligned with ISO 9712, is the usual personnel certification in Australia, and many South Australian employers require it. Some employers working for US-owned operators, US OEMs or on US-code projects also use ASNT SNT-TC-1A, where the employer's written practice controls qualification and certification. Atlantis trains to ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; it does not train toward or administer AINDT or ISO 9712 certification. The simulator itself is scheme-neutral practice.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in South Australia
Short answer: trainees use guided lessons to learn fundamentals; working technicians use rare-defect jobs to stay sharp between assignments; Level IIIs and team leads build scenario sets, benchmark crews and find coverage gaps.
Trainees. South Australia is growing its defence and energy workforce, with TAFE SA, university engineering programmes and industry pathways all feeding new entrants. A new trainee often learns theory in a classroom, then waits for limited time on real equipment. The 33 guided lessons in the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator let a trainee build the basics first: choosing a probe, setting range and sensitivity, scanning a weld, recognising common indications. When they reach a real bench or a real site, the first hours are spent refining technique instead of learning where the controls are.
Working technicians. A shipyard UT technician may go months without a corrosion survey, and a FIFO technician at a mine may go a year without TOFD. Skills fade quietly. Short, scored jobs between swings, during a slow week or before a shutdown let technicians refresh the methods and defect types they meet least, including rare flaws that are hard to find in real specimens.
Level IIIs and team leads. A Level III can assemble a scenario set that mirrors a client's job mix, assign it to every new starter, and compare the results objectively. That gives a clearer picture of who is ready for which work, where the crew's gaps are, and which methods need more training time. For inspection companies bidding into defence or resources supply chains, it is also a structured way to show that people are being kept current between jobs.
Why simulator practice suits South Australia's projects
Short answer: long programmes, remote sites and a stretched workforce make it hard to give technicians enough varied practice on real specimens. Browser-based practice fills those gaps without travel, specimens or radiation.
South Australia's biggest inspection programmes run for years. The frigate and submarine work at Osborne is a multi-decade effort, the Whyalla rebuild will take years, and mining and gas plants run continuously with planned shutdowns. Programmes of that length need a steady supply of competent technicians and a way to keep existing staff consistent. At the same time, the state competes with Western Australia, Queensland and the eastern states for the same experienced people.
Distance matters too. Olympic Dam is more than five hundred kilometres north of Adelaide by road, and Moomba is further still. A technician on a FIFO roster cannot easily book an hour in an Adelaide training room. Reference specimens with realistic, well-characterised flaws are expensive and scarce, and a shared set cannot be in Osborne, Whyalla and Roxby Downs at once. A browser-based simulator removes those constraints.
Safety is the other benefit. Simulator practice involves no radiation, no confined space entry, no working at height and no hot work permit. Trainees can make mistakes, see the result in their score and learn from it without risk to themselves or to a client's asset.
None of this replaces supervised field experience. Real welds, real corrosion and real access problems teach things that no simulator can. The point is to make the time on real work count for more.
Practice vs certification
Short answer: Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It does not grant certification, it does not count as an AINDT or ISO 9712 examination, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by an employer's written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A.
Certification in NDT always involves training, documented experience and examinations, including a practical examination on real specimens. Under AINDT's ISO 9712 based scheme those examinations are set and controlled by the certification body. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice sets the requirements and the employer certifies its own personnel. Either way, simulator scores are not examination results.
What the simulator does is help people arrive at their examinations, and at their first real jobs, better prepared. Repeated set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing build habits that carry over. A Level III can use simulator results to judge when a candidate is ready to sit a practical exam, but the exam itself happens on real specimens under the relevant scheme. For radiography, the simulator gives interpretation and technique practice; the EPA licence and radiation safety training remain separate legal requirements.
Atlantis's own training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. See Atlantis NDT training and ASNT training in Australia for details. Atlantis has no South Australian training centre.
Bring Practical NDT to your South Australian team
Short answer: request a demo, tell us which South Australian sectors and methods matter to your team, and we will show the matching environments and agree a pilot. Pricing is quote on request.
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. The product is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Shipyard suppliers, inspection companies, mining and gas operators, training providers and TAFE programmes can use it as supplied or ask for scenario sets aligned to their own procedures and job mix.
A typical start is simple. We hold a short call to understand your work, whether that is defence weld inspection, gas plant integrity, smelter maintenance or shop fabrication. We then demonstrate the relevant environments live, agree a pilot group and set up accounts so people can practise in a browser or app. Team leads see results so they can track progress and spot gaps. There is no hardware to install and no lab to book.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in South Australia?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app, so it works in Adelaide, Whyalla, Port Pirie, Roxby Downs or a Moomba camp wherever there is a connection. There is no South Australian centre to visit. Demos are arranged through the contact form.
Does Practical NDT count towards AINDT certification?
No. AINDT certification requires training, documented experience and examinations under its ISO 9712 based scheme. Simulator practice can help a candidate prepare, but it is not part of that scheme, and Atlantis does not provide AINDT or ISO 9712 training or examinations.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
Yes, as preparation. Scored set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing jobs build the habits a practical exam tests. The exam itself must still be taken on real specimens under the relevant scheme or written practice.
Is it useful for shipyard weld inspection at Osborne?
It is relevant practice. The Welding Workshop covers PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, PT, RT and VT on weld coupons and fabrication joints. Defence programmes set their own qualification requirements, which the simulator does not replace.
Does it cover the work at Moomba and Olympic Dam?
The Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments cover corrosion mapping, weld inspection, IRIS tube inspection, LRUT screening, PMI and tank surveys, which are typical of gas processing and metallurgical plants.
Does simulator radiography need an EPA licence?
No. No radiation is involved in the simulator. Real industrial radiography in South Australia requires an EPA licence under the Radiation Protection and Control Act 2021, and the simulator does not satisfy any part of that requirement.
Can an Adelaide inspection company use it to benchmark new hires?
Yes. A Level III can assign the same scenario set to every candidate and compare scores objectively before deciding who goes to which job.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: trainees on guided lessons, working technicians refreshing less-used methods and rare defects, and Level IIIs building and assigning scenario sets.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in South Australia?
Yes, ASNT SNT-TC-1A training only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. See NDT training in Adelaide.
