NDT Practice in Regina: Turnaround-Ready Skills for Refinery, Pipe Mill and Pressure Equipment Crews

Regina's industrial skyline is defined by two facilities on the north side of the city: the Co-op Refinery Complex, one of the largest employers in the city, and the steelmaking and pipe mill that has operated since 1961 and was renamed Orion Steel after a 2025 change of ownership. Around them sit fabrication shops, pipeline facilities, potash operations to the west and north, and the provincial safety authority that licenses pressure welders and inspects boilers and pressure vessels. That concentration produces an NDT market dominated by two rhythms: the intense, scheduled burst of a refinery turnaround and the continuous quality control of a pipe mill. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT is designed for technicians who need to be sharp for both. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like environment, accessed in a browser or app, where you inspect realistic virtual process piping, heat-exchanger tubes, storage tanks and welds, then receive instant scored feedback. A new trainee, a working Level II and a Level III crew lead can all use it without specimens, lab time or travel.

Why Turnaround Readiness Makes NDT Practice Essential in Regina

Refinery turnarounds compress months of inspection into weeks. In spring 2026 the Co-op Refinery Complex carried out a major turnaround expected to take about 54 days, with sections of the complex dismantled for repair, maintenance and upgrades. During a window like that, owners and contractors need large numbers of inspection personnel at once: technicians to measure exchanger tube wall loss, map corrosion on piping, verify alloys on replacement components, examine repair welds and survey tanks. Many of those people come from out of town, many have spent the preceding months on different kinds of work, and all of them are expected to perform at full competence from the first shift. The turnaround schedule has no room for someone relearning an IRIS setup or a PMI routine on live equipment.

Practising in advance is the obvious answer, but it is hard to do physically. Representative tube bundles, corroded pipe samples and flawed welds with documented defects are expensive and rarely available outside large training centres. Live equipment is off limits until the unit is down, and at that point the clock is running. A virtual NDT training environment gives technicians a way to rehearse the specific tasks the turnaround will require during the weeks before mobilisation, and it gives crew leads a way to check readiness objectively before anyone steps onto the unit. Safety is part of the case, too: a refinery during turnaround is full of confined spaces, work at height, hot work and radiography exclusion zones, and every hour a technician spends learning on the simulator instead of on the unit is an hour of reduced exposure.

Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank: The Refinery Side of Practical NDT

Practical NDT's Oil & Gas Site environment is a process-plant setting with 73 jobs across weld inspection, corrosion assessment, tube inspection and screening, and it is where Regina's refinery-focused technicians will spend most of their time. The IRIS internal rotary UT scenarios cover heat-exchanger and boiler tube inspection: centring the probe, controlling pull speed, reading the rotating display and interpreting wall loss at baffles, supports and the tubesheet. The PMI scenarios drill alloy verification, a quick task that is easy to get wrong without care, and one that matters every time a replacement component or weld consumable goes into a mixed-metallurgy unit. Contact UT scenarios build consistent thickness measurement for corrosion trending, and LRUT guided-wave scenarios teach screening of long pipe runs, including how to recognise welds, supports and other features so they are not mistaken for corrosion.

The Storage Tank environment gives a full-size tank for UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Refineries and terminals hold large tank inventories, and tank inspections are often scheduled around the same outages as process units. MFL floor screening in particular is a task many technicians perform only occasionally, and practising the scan pattern, coverage and follow-up logic ahead of time helps a crew work efficiently when the tank is finally open, cleaned and ready.

Welding Workshop: Pipe Mill and Fabrication Inspection Practice

The other half of Regina's NDT economy is steel and pipe. The Regina steelworks has long produced large-diameter line pipe; industry reports indicated that more than three-quarters of the pipe for the roughly 800-kilometre Trans Mountain expansion was manufactured there. Pipe mills rely on continuous inspection of seam welds and pipe body, typically with automated ultrasonic systems backed up by manual UT and other methods for prove-up and repair verification. Fabrication shops around Regina, meanwhile, build pressure vessels, structural steel, agricultural equipment and process skids, all of which need weld inspection.

The Welding Workshop environment, with 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, is where that work maps. Contact UT scenarios teach angle-beam scanning technique, calibration and sizing on butt and fillet welds. The phased array simulator scenarios let technicians build sectorial scans and interpret S-scans for lack of fusion, porosity and cracking. TOFD scenarios cover diffraction-based detection and through-wall sizing. RT scenarios train interpretation of weld radiographs without any source. MT, PT and VT scenarios cover the surface checks that accompany nearly every repair. While the platform does not replicate a specific mill's automated system, the manual UT and weld interpretation skills it builds are the same ones used for prove-up and repair verification. The NDT Lab, with 52 bench jobs, gives everyone a place to rehearse calibration and reference-block routines, and the Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, supports anyone moving into aviation work.

The Full Method List: 12 Methods and 33 Guided Lessons

Practical NDT covers 12 methods in four groups. Surface: penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing and visual testing. Volumetric: contact ultrasonic testing, phased array UT, time-of-flight diffraction and radiographic testing. Electromagnetic: eddy current testing and magnetic flux leakage. Specialist: LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for tubes and PMI alloy verification. There are 33 guided lessons that teach the physics and procedure behind each method before you attempt scored jobs, and each job returns immediate feedback on coverage, detection, characterisation and sizing.

In practical terms, a Regina technician preparing for a turnaround might spend a week alternating between IRIS and PMI scenarios in the Oil & Gas Site and shell-thickness grids in the Storage Tank, then finish with repair-weld UT and MT in the Welding Workshop. A pipe mill inspector might focus on the ultrasonic testing simulator scenarios in the Welding Workshop and NDT Lab to keep manual UT skills sharp between automated-system shifts. A fabrication shop trainee might start in the NDT Lab and move into MT, PT and VT on weld coupons. The platform's value is that each of those paths is available on demand.

Built for Every Skill Level

New trainees, including students from Saskatchewan Polytechnic or other technical programs, start with guided fundamentals. Early scenarios are forgiving and explanatory, and difficulty increases as competence grows, adding weld geometry, surface condition, competing indications and time pressure.

Working technicians use targeted refreshers and rare-defect scenarios between assignments. Someone who has not performed IRIS since the last turnaround can rebuild confidence in a few sessions. A technician who rarely sees transverse cracks or root defects on radiographs can practise them deliberately.

Level III and team leads can build and assign scenario sets that match the upcoming turnaround scope or a fabrication contract, benchmark the whole crew on the same defects and identify coverage gaps before mobilisation. For contractors who staff Regina turnarounds with mixed local and travelling crews, that objective benchmark is a useful readiness check, though never a substitute for certification records. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training.

How It Complements Formal Training and Canadian Certification

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not count toward one, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens. In Canada, NDT personnel are certified to CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712, by the NDT Certification Body at Natural Resources Canada. The Canadian General Standards Board ceased operations on 1 April 2026, but the standard remains in force and NRCan continues to certify. Certification requires formal training, documented experience, and written and practical examinations on real specimens. Practical NDT is not NRCan-recognised or CGSB-recognised training and does not substitute for any of those steps.

Radiography carries an additional federal requirement: anyone operating a gamma exposure device must be certified by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission as an exposure device operator, or work under direct supervision of one. The RT scenarios in Practical NDT involve no source and do not count toward that certification. Some employers also operate an ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practice, and Atlantis's own formal NDT training is built around SNT-TC-1A. Provincial requirements for pressure welders and pressure equipment inspectors, administered in Saskatchewan by TSASK, are separate again. The simulator supports NDT practical exam preparation and day-to-day skill maintenance; the real exams and licences are earned in the real world.

Regina's Regulators and Industrial Anchors

The Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK), headquartered in Regina, is responsible for boiler and pressure vessel safety in the province. It handles design registration, permits and inspections, and administers examinations and licensing for power engineers, pressure welders and pressure equipment inspectors. That framework drives much of the local demand for weld inspection on pressure equipment and for in-service inspection of vessels and piping. Federally regulated pipelines crossing southern Saskatchewan fall under the Canada Energy Regulator, and radiography exposure devices fall under the CNSC.

The anchors are industrial. The Co-op Refinery Complex, with more than 970 people, is a major employer. The Regina steelworks and pipe mill supplies line pipe to projects across the continent. Potash operations west and north of the city, including solution mining, require process plant inspection of piping, evaporators, dryers and tanks. Southern Saskatchewan is also home to oil production and pipelines, and the province's coal and gas power plants, including the Boundary Dam carbon-capture project near Estevan, sit within reach of Regina-based contractors. These facilities are named solely as industrial context; none is presented as an Atlantis customer or partner. What they share is heavy pressure equipment, welded pipe and tanks, which is exactly the inspection mix Practical NDT's Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank and Welding Workshop environments are designed to rehearse.

Planning Practice Around Regina's Work Calendar

A useful way to use the platform is to map practice to the calendar. In the months before a scheduled turnaround, assign IRIS, PMI, thickness and tank scenarios to the people who will be doing that work. During steady production periods, keep pipe mill and fabrication inspectors practising UT, PAUT, TOFD and weld interpretation. For new hires, schedule NDT Lab fundamentals during their first weeks so calibration and reference routines are automatic before they touch production work. Leads can review benchmark results at each stage and adjust assignments, focusing coaching time where the data shows it is needed.

Because the platform runs in a browser or app, technicians can practise from home, a hotel or a site trailer. That makes it useful for travelling turnaround crews who arrive in Regina for a few weeks, and for local technicians who rotate out to potash, power or oilfield work around the province.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. It is a practice and readiness tool only. NRCan certification to CAN/CGSB-48.9712 requires formal training, experience and written and practical exams on real specimens. The simulator also does not replace an SNT-TC-1A practical exam, CNSC exposure device operator certification or any TSASK examination or licence.

Can we use it to prepare crews for a refinery turnaround?

Yes. The Oil & Gas Site includes IRIS, PMI, UT thickness, corrosion and LRUT scenarios, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell UT and MFL floor screening. Leads can assign sets matched to the turnaround scope and benchmark readiness beforehand.

Is it relevant to pipe mill inspection?

It builds the manual UT, PAUT, TOFD and weld interpretation skills used for prove-up and repair verification. It does not replicate any particular mill's automated inspection system.

What experience level is it for?

All levels. New trainees follow guided fundamentals, working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments, and Level III leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews and find gaps.
