NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Queensland
Queensland's inspection work runs from the LNG trains on Curtis Island to coal mines in the Bowen Basin, a refinery on the Brisbane River, metal refineries in Townsville and sugar mill boilers up and down the coast. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is designed for a workforce like that: spread out, busy in bursts, and often a long drive from any practical NDT facility. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. Technicians work through realistic jobs in a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, set up and carry out the inspection, record their findings, and receive a score and feedback as soon as the job is done. Trainees use it to build fundamentals, working technicians use it to keep less-used methods fresh, and Level IIIs use it to assign and compare scenario sets across a crew.
This page is the Queensland hub. It covers where the state's NDT work is, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto Queensland industries, the regulators and standards Queensland technicians work under, and how to arrange a demo. It links the city pages Atlantis already has, including Brisbane and Gladstone.
Queensland's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: Queensland's NDT demand is concentrated in six areas: Gladstone's LNG, alumina and port complex; the Surat and Bowen basin gas fields and their pipelines; the Bowen Basin coal mines served from Mackay; south-east Queensland around Brisbane, Ipswich and the Port of Brisbane; Townsville and the North West Minerals Province; and the sugar, power and port towns along the coast.
Gladstone and Curtis Island. Gladstone is Queensland's heavy industry capital. Three LNG export plants on Curtis Island (Queensland Curtis LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Gladstone LNG) liquefy coal seam gas piped from inland fields. On the mainland, two alumina refineries, the Boyne Island aluminium smelter, a coal-fired power station, chemical plants and one of the state's largest bulk ports keep inspection companies working all year. Turnarounds at the LNG plants and the alumina refineries bring large crews into the city for short, intense periods. Corrosion mapping, weld inspection on piping and vessels, exchanger tube inspection, PMI and tank inspection are the core work.
The gas fields and pipelines. Coal seam gas production in the Surat Basin around Roma, Miles, Chinchilla and Dalby, and in parts of the Bowen Basin, feeds the Gladstone plants through long transmission pipelines and thousands of wells, gathering lines, compressor stations and water treatment plants. Pipeline construction and integrity work rely on radiography and automated or manual UT of girth welds, coating and corrosion assessment, and guided-wave screening at crossings and above-ground sections.
The Bowen Basin coal fields and Mackay. Queensland is a major exporter of metallurgical coal, and the Bowen Basin mines run fleets of draglines, shovels, haul trucks, wash plants, conveyors and train loaders. Mackay, with the Paget industrial area and the Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay coal terminals nearby, is the maintenance and engineering base for much of that activity. Fatigue cracking in booms, buckets, frames and structures makes MT, PT, UT and VT the everyday methods. Rail and port structures on the coal chains add more of the same.
Brisbane, Ipswich and the south-east. The Brisbane region has Lytton refinery near the river mouth, one of only two oil refineries still operating in Australia, alongside the Port of Brisbane's fuel, chemical and bulk terminals. Brisbane Airport hosts airline engineering and maintenance facilities, RAAF Base Amberley near Ipswich is the country's largest air force base, and the defence industry around Redbank and the south-west corridor builds and supports military vehicles. Fabrication shops, engineering consultancies and most inspection company head offices in the state sit in the south-east.
Townsville and the north-west. Townsville has a zinc refinery and a copper refinery, a busy port, and large army and air force bases. Inland, the North West Minerals Province around Mount Isa and Cloncurry mines and processes copper, zinc, lead and other minerals. Processing plants, tanks, acid plants, pressure vessels and long-distance rail and pipelines create steady inspection demand in a region where practical NDT facilities are far apart.
Sugar, power and the coast. Queensland's sugar mills, from the Burdekin to Bundaberg and the Mackay district, run large boilers during the crushing season and carry out their main maintenance and inspection in the slack season. Coal-fired power stations such as Callide, Stanwell, Tarong and Gladstone have boiler tubes, headers and steam piping that are inspected during outages. Ports at Gladstone, Hay Point, Abbot Point, Townsville and Brisbane add marine structures and loaders. Each of these creates seasonal peaks, which is exactly when skills that have been idle for months are suddenly needed.
Practical NDT by city in Queensland
Short answer: Brisbane has its own Practical NDT page, and Gladstone and Mackay have related Atlantis pages. The table maps these and the other main Queensland centres to the environments and methods that suit their industries.
| City or area | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Brisbane | Refining, port terminals, aviation maintenance, defence, fabrication | Oil & Gas Site, Aircraft Hangar, Welding Workshop; UT, PAUT, ET, PT, IRIS, PMI |
| Gladstone | LNG, alumina, aluminium smelting, power, port | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; PAUT, IRIS, PMI, MFL, RT |
| Mackay | Coal mining maintenance, coal terminals, sugar | Welding Workshop, NDT Lab; MT, PT, UT, VT |
| Surat Basin (Roma, Miles, Chinchilla) | Coal seam gas wells, compressors, pipelines | Oil & Gas Site, Welding Workshop; RT, UT, LRUT, PAUT |
| Townsville | Zinc and copper refining, port, defence bases | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, Aircraft Hangar; UT, PMI, MFL, ET |
| Mount Isa and Cloncurry | Mining and mineral processing, rail | Welding Workshop, Storage Tank; MT, UT, PT, VT |
| Ipswich and Amberley | Military aviation, defence vehicles, rail workshops | Aircraft Hangar, Welding Workshop; ET, PT, UT, MT |
| Bundaberg, the Burdekin and coastal mills | Sugar mill boilers, power, ports | Oil & Gas Site, NDT Lab; IRIS, UT thickness, PT, MT |
Brisbane combines refinery and terminal work at Lytton and the port with aviation and defence maintenance and a large fabrication base. That mix makes it the most varied city in the state for NDT. Refinery technicians practise IRIS, PMI and corrosion mapping in the Oil & Gas Site; aviation technicians use the Aircraft Hangar's 54 jobs for eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic inspection of airframes and components; and fabrication shops use the Welding Workshop for weld inspection. Atlantis has ASNT SNT-TC-1A training for Brisbane employers, Level III consulting in Brisbane and a third-party inspection page for Brisbane.
Gladstone is LNG, alumina and power, and its technicians face some of the state's most demanding turnaround schedules. The Oil & Gas Site's 73 jobs cover weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, both of which match the plants on Curtis Island and the refinery tank farms. Related pages: ASNT training in Gladstone, third-party inspection in Gladstone and NDT ERP for Gladstone inspection companies.
Mackay services the Bowen Basin. The work is crack detection on heavy mining equipment, structural welds on draglines and conveyors, shafts and pins, and the coal terminals' stackers, reclaimers and ship loaders. MT and PT on fabrication joints in the Welding Workshop and UT of components in the NDT Lab are the closest matches. See NDT ERP for Mackay.
The Surat Basin towns host the gas field contractors. Pipeline girth welds, compressor station piping, separators and water treatment plants need radiography, UT and corrosion assessment, and long buried or above-ground runs suit guided-wave screening. Technicians here often work long distances from any training room, which makes browser-based practice more valuable.
Townsville mixes metal refining with defence. Acid-resistant alloys, tanks and process piping in the refineries make PMI, UT thickness and tank floor screening routine, while military aviation at RAAF Base Townsville and the army's presence add aircraft and vehicle inspection.
Mount Isa and Cloncurry are remote mining and processing centres. Crusher and mill components, concentrator plant, tanks and structures need MT, UT and PT on a steady basis, and practice that does not require travelling to the coast is welcome.
Ipswich and Amberley are defined by RAAF Base Amberley, defence vehicle work and rail workshops. Eddy current and penetrant inspection of aircraft components, plus weld inspection on vehicle hulls and rail rolling stock, fit the Aircraft Hangar and Welding Workshop environments.
Bundaberg, the Burdekin and the other mill towns are about boilers. Sugar mill boilers and the coastal power stations have tubes, drums, headers and steam lines that are inspected in a compressed off-season window. IRIS, UT thickness and surface methods are the skills to sharpen before that window opens.
Environments and methods that match Queensland work
Short answer: use the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank for LNG, refining, alumina, metal refining and power; the Welding Workshop for mining equipment, pipelines, fabrication and defence vehicles; the Aircraft Hangar for airline and military aviation; and the NDT Lab for fundamentals and component work.
The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five workplace environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. The methods are grouped as surface methods (PT, MT, VT), volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT), electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL), and three specialist techniques: LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification. Here is how they line up with Queensland work.
- Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). Process plant practice covering weld inspection, corrosion mapping, tube inspection and screening. It suits the Curtis Island LNG plants, Lytton refinery, the alumina refineries and the zinc and copper refineries, gas field compressor stations and power station outage work.
- Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matching LNG and condensate storage, port fuel terminals, alumina refinery process tanks and mining process tanks.
- Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for the fabrication shops of Brisbane, Gladstone, Mackay and Townsville, for mining equipment repair, for pipeline construction in the gas fields and for defence vehicle manufacturing.
- Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection, relevant to airline maintenance at Brisbane, to regional aviation operators, and to military aviation at Amberley and Townsville.
- NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for trainees, TAFE programmes, calibration practice and component inspection of shafts, pins, castings and forgings.
A few methods matter particularly in Queensland. MT and PT are the daily bread of the coal industry, where crack detection on large welded structures under fatigue loading is constant. IRIS is essential for exchanger tubes at the LNG plants and refineries and for boiler tubes in sugar mills and power stations, and good IRIS interpretation depends on having seen many wall-loss patterns. RT and UT of girth welds dominate pipeline construction in the gas fields. PAUT is increasingly used for corrosion mapping and weld inspection in all of the process industries. Each of these can be practised repeatedly in the simulator with realistic defects and immediate scoring.
Regulators and requirements Queensland technicians meet
Short answer: AINDT certification, based on ISO 9712, is the local norm for Queensland NDT personnel, with ASNT SNT-TC-1A used by some employers on US-code work. Radiography is licensed under the Radiation Safety Act 1999 through Queensland Health. Workplace and plant safety sit with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, and mines and petroleum and gas with Resources Safety and Health Queensland. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme.
Personnel certification. Most Queensland employers and asset owners specify AINDT certification for NDT technicians. Some operators, EPC contractors and suppliers working to US codes, or for US-owned assets and OEMs, also qualify staff under ASNT SNT-TC-1A through an employer written practice, and aviation NDT follows aerospace employer schemes. Atlantis's training covers ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; Atlantis does not provide AINDT or ISO 9712 training or exams. The simulator is useful whichever scheme a technician is working towards. See ASNT training in Australia for the SNT-TC-1A option.
Radiation safety. Industrial radiography in Queensland is regulated under the Radiation Safety Act 1999 (Qld), administered by Queensland Health. Using radioactive sources or X-ray equipment for radiography needs a use licence, possessing the sources needs a possession licence, and a radiation safety and protection plan applies to the practice. National codes and guidance from ARPANSA inform the state requirements. Confirm current licence conditions with Queensland Health before any real exposure. Simulator practice involves no radiation.
Plant, pressure equipment, mines and gas. General workplace safety, including the registration of certain plant designs and items such as boilers and pressure vessels, is administered by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld). Resources Safety and Health Queensland regulates coal mines, metalliferous mines and quarries, and petroleum and gas operations, including pipelines under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004. Pressure equipment is commonly designed and inspected to AS 1210, AS 4041, AS 4037 and AS/NZS 3788, and pipelines to AS 2885.
Codes and standards. Queensland technicians work to Australian Standards and AS ISO adoptions for the individual NDT methods, to AS/NZS 1554 for structural welding, and on LNG, gas and some refinery and mining projects to ASME, API and AWS codes as well. The simulator does not certify compliance with any of them. It trains the habits they depend on: calibration, coverage, recording and sizing against acceptance criteria.
For written practices and procedures on Queensland sites that work to US codes, see NDT Level III consulting in Brisbane. To keep AINDT and ASNT certificates, equipment calibration and jobs in one system, see the Atlantis ERP for Brisbane inspection companies.
Turnarounds, crushing seasons and outages: the Queensland practice gap
Short answer: Queensland inspection demand peaks at predictable times, from LNG and refinery turnarounds to sugar mill slack seasons and power station outages, and technicians often go months between uses of a method. A browser-based simulator lets crews refresh the exact skills a campaign will need, before it starts.
Ask an inspection manager in Gladstone or Mackay when they are busiest and the answer is a calendar: the LNG train turnaround, the alumina refinery shutdown, the power station outage, the slack season at the mills, the dragline rebuild. Between those peaks, many technicians do a narrow range of routine work, and the methods they are not using fade. The first shift of a turnaround is the worst possible time to find that out.
Queensland's geography makes physical refresher training hard. The distance from Mount Isa to Brisbane is roughly the distance from Brisbane to Melbourne, and technicians in Roma, Emerald, Moranbah or Townsville cannot easily attend a practical session at a city laboratory. Reference specimens with realistic flaws are expensive and rarely spare. A simulator job on a laptop in a motel room or a mine camp is far easier to arrange.
The workforce itself is under pressure too. Queensland competes with Western Australia and with overseas projects for experienced NDT technicians, and the resources and energy sectors are changing as gas, coal and new energy projects ebb and flow. New entrants come from trades, apprenticeships, the defence force and interstate. Getting them useful quickly, and giving experienced people a structured way to show what good inspection looks like, are both things a shared scenario library supports.
Finally, simulator practice is safe. There is no confined space entry into a vessel, no work at height on a dragline boom, no heat stress in a Central Queensland summer and no radiation. Mistakes cost nothing except a lower score and a chance to try again.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Queensland
Short answer: trainees follow the 33 guided lessons from bench fundamentals to plant jobs, working technicians keep rarely used methods and defects fresh between campaigns, and Level IIIs and supervisors build and assign scenario sets to benchmark crews objectively.
Trainees. Queensland's new NDT technicians come from TAFE courses, fitter and boilermaker apprenticeships, mining maintenance roles, the defence force and other states. Theory courses and short supervised practicals are only the start; the logged industrial experience needed for certification takes months, and on a busy site a trainee may watch more than they inspect. The guided lessons start in the NDT Lab with calibration and simple flaws, then progress to weld coupons, process plant and tank jobs. A trainee arriving at Gladstone or Moranbah has already practised the basics many times over.
Working technicians. A Level II who spends most of the year on thickness surveys may be asked to run PAUT on a weld or IRIS on a bundle during the next turnaround. Rare-defect refreshers keep those skills ready: hydrogen-related cracking, lack of sidewall fusion, pitting on a single tube, a wrong alloy in a spool, a lamination near a nozzle, a fatigue crack at a weld toe on a mining structure.
Level IIIs and team leads. A Level III responsible for a Queensland crew can assign the job mix that a coming campaign demands, compare results objectively across employees and contractors, and spot coverage gaps before mobilisation. This is especially useful when bringing interstate or overseas technicians into a Queensland team, or when combining crews from several contractors on a shutdown. The results are an extra piece of evidence for supervisors, not a replacement for the employer's own practical assessments.
Practice vs certification
Short answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is for practice and readiness. It is not a certification under AINDT, ISO 9712 or ASNT SNT-TC-1A and it does not replace any practical examination on real specimens.
Every NDT certification route used in Queensland requires training, documented industrial experience and a practical examination on real specimens. Under AINDT certification the examination follows the scheme's own rules; under ASNT SNT-TC-1A the employer administers it according to its written practice under a Level III. No scheme counts simulator time as industrial experience unless an employer's own procedures explicitly say so, and Atlantis makes no such claim.
What practice does is reduce the gap between knowing and doing. A candidate who has set up a scan plan many times, interpreted a range of radiographs and sized indications against acceptance criteria goes into the practical with more confidence and fewer surprises. A supervisor who has seen a technician's simulator results over several weeks has more to go on when deciding who is ready for which job. For formal training, see Atlantis NDT training, which is ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility.
Bring Practical NDT to your Queensland team
Short answer: book a demo, tell Atlantis which Queensland sectors and methods your team works in, and agree a pilot group. Pricing is quote on request.
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. Its scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. The product is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, so an inspection company in Gladstone, a mining maintenance contractor in Mackay, a training provider in Brisbane or an asset owner's integrity team can use it as it stands or ask for scenario sets aligned to their procedures and job mix. There is no Queensland centre to visit; access is online.
Getting started takes a short call about your work, whether that is LNG turnarounds, coal mining equipment, pipeline construction, refinery and terminal integrity, aviation or sugar mill boilers. Atlantis then demonstrates the matching environments live, agrees a pilot group, and sets up accounts so technicians can practise in a browser or app wherever they are. Supervisors can see progress and results. Demos are scheduled to suit Brisbane time.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator available in Queensland?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app, so technicians can use it in Brisbane, Gladstone, Mackay, Townsville, a gas field camp or at home. There is no physical centre; demos are arranged through the contact form.
Does simulator practice count towards AINDT certification?
No. AINDT certification needs training, documented industrial experience and examinations under the scheme's rules, including a practical on real specimens. The simulator can help a candidate prepare, but Atlantis does not offer AINDT or ISO 9712 training or examinations.
Can it help me prepare for an NDT practical exam?
Yes, as preparation. Repeated set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing jobs build the habits a practical exam tests. The exam itself is still taken on real specimens.
Is it relevant to Gladstone LNG and alumina turnarounds?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site covers corrosion mapping, weld inspection, IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI and LRUT screening, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening, which together match most turnaround inspection scopes.
Does it help with coal mining equipment inspection?
For the core methods, yes. MT, PT, UT and VT practice on weld joints and components maps well to crack detection on draglines, shovels, conveyors and terminal machinery, although site procedures and acceptance criteria still apply.
Does it include a phased array and ultrasonic testing simulator?
Yes. UT contact, PAUT and TOFD are all included, across the NDT Lab, Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site, with set-up, scanning and sizing on realistic welds and corrosion.
Can it be used for sugar mill and power station boiler work?
Yes as practice. IRIS and UT thickness on tubes, plus surface methods on headers and welds, are covered in the Oil & Gas Site and NDT Lab. It is a useful refresher before the slack-season or outage window.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, RT is one of the twelve methods, focused on technique and film or digital image interpretation. There is no radiation, so simulator use needs no licence under the Radiation Safety Act 1999; real exposures still do.
Can a supervisor benchmark a crew before a shutdown?
Yes. A Level III or supervisor can assign the same scenario set to every technician and contractor and compare results objectively, which helps allocate people to jobs.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Queensland?
Yes, ASNT SNT-TC-1A training only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility for employers whose projects or clients require SNT-TC-1A personnel. See NDT training in Brisbane.
Who is it for?
New trainees on guided lessons, working technicians refreshing less-used methods and rare defects, and Level IIIs and supervisors building scenario sets for their teams.
How do we get started?
Request a demo and Atlantis will show the environments that fit your work and agree a pilot. Pricing is quote on request.
