NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Norway

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Norway is a country where that kind of practice fits the way NDT people actually work. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician enters a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and gets a score the moment the job is closed. Norway's inspection work is dominated by the Norwegian continental shelf: offshore platforms, subsea systems and floating production units, the gas processing plants and terminals at Kårstø, Kollsnes, Nyhamna and Melkøya, the Mongstad refinery, and the fabrication yards along the west coast that build modules, jackets and hulls. Around that core sit the maritime cluster of Møre og Romsdal, aluminium smelters and hydropower, and a young offshore wind industry. Many inspectors work rotations of two weeks offshore and longer periods at home, and spend long spells on a single method. Practical NDT gives them a way to keep every method sharp between hitches, at any level from first-week trainee to working Level III, without booking lab time or consuming specimens.

This page is the Norway hub for Practical NDT. It covers where Norwegian NDT work happens, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto it, the certification and regulatory framework technicians work inside, and an honest account of what a simulator can and cannot do. Norway's NDT workforce and where the work is

Norwegian NDT work follows the oil and gas value chain from offshore fields to onshore terminals and yards, with significant additional demand from maritime, metals, hydropower and offshore wind. The west coast between Stavanger and Kristiansund holds most of it, with a northern outpost at Hammerfest.

Stavanger and Rogaland. Stavanger is the administrative capital of the Norwegian oil industry. Operators, contractors, inspection companies and the offshore regulator Havtil are based there, and the region has supply bases, module and maintenance yards, and the Kårstø gas processing plant north of Haugesund. Inspectors based in Rogaland work offshore on platform topsides, risers and process piping, and onshore at terminals and yards. Corrosion under insulation, erosion in production piping, fatigue cracking in structural nodes and weld integrity on modifications are constant themes.

Bergen and Vestland. The Bergen region holds the Mongstad refinery and crude terminal, the Kollsnes gas processing plant and the Sture terminal, plus supply bases and maintenance yards at Ågotnes and elsewhere, and the fabrication yards of Sunnhordland and Stord. Refinery and gas plant work brings exchanger tube testing, alloy verification, tank surveys and turnaround inspection; yard work brings weld inspection on modules, jackets and floaters.

Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag. The Nyhamna gas plant near Kristiansund, the maritime cluster around Ålesund with its offshore vessel designers and shipyards, the aluminium and metals plants of Sunndalsøra and other fjord towns, and the yards and research community around Trondheim add shipbuilding weld inspection, process plant work and materials testing.

Northern Norway. Hammerfest LNG on Melkøya processes gas from the Barents Sea, and Barents fields are served from Hammerfest and other northern bases. Arctic conditions, cold-service materials and long travel distances make remote practice especially useful.

Oslo and the east. Oslo hosts engineering head offices, the Norwegian NDT and research community, and much of the country's aviation maintenance and industrial manufacturing in the surrounding counties. Hydropower penstocks, dams and turbines across the country add a steady load of weld and structural inspection.

Offshore wind. Floating offshore wind has been pioneered from Norway, with the Hywind Tampen project supplying power to offshore fields, and government plans for further offshore wind areas. Mooring components, floating hulls and tower welds add new inspection work for yards and service companies.

Stavanger. Most of Norway's offshore inspection planning starts here. Topside piping and vessels need corrosion mapping with UT and PAUT, guided-wave LRUT screening on long pipe runs and inaccessible sections, IRIS on exchangers, and RT or TOFD on modification welds. The Practical NDT Stavanger page has more detail, and Atlantis also has an NDT training page for Stavanger and an offshore asset digital twin page for Stavanger.

Bergen and Mongstad. The Mongstad refinery and terminal and the Kollsnes gas plant give the Bergen region the most process-plant style work in Norway: exchanger bundles, mixed-alloy piping, fired equipment and large crude and product tanks. IRIS, PMI, MFL floor screening and tank thickness surveys are the practice priorities. See the Mongstad digital twin page and the Bergen ERP page.

Stord and Sunnhordland. Large fabrication yards build topside modules, jackets and platform structures. Thick welds, tight schedules and strict project specifications make PAUT and TOFD sizing and RT interpretation the key skills, all covered in the Welding Workshop.

Ålesund and Kristiansund. The maritime cluster builds and maintains advanced offshore and fishing vessels, while Kristiansund supports Norwegian Sea fields and the Nyhamna plant. Weld inspection on hulls and outfitting, and process work at the gas plant, both apply.

Trondheim. A strong research and engineering community, yards in Trøndelag and nearby metals industry make the NDT Lab and Welding Workshop the natural fit. See the Trondheim ERP page.

Hammerfest. LNG processing equipment, cryogenic piping and storage tanks bring IRIS, PMI, UT and tank work in a remote Arctic setting where travel to a training lab is a real cost.

Oslo region. Aviation maintenance, manufacturing and engineering head offices make Oslo a coordination and training hub. See the Oslo NDT training page.

Environments and methods that match Norwegian work

The short answer: offshore and onshore process work maps to the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, yard fabrication and shipbuilding to the Welding Workshop, aviation to the Aircraft Hangar, and materials and manufacturing work to the NDT Lab. All twelve methods are available in each rollout.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The largest scenario set, covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. It is the closest virtual match to Norwegian topsides and onshore gas plants: UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification on duplex, super duplex and other corrosion-resistant alloy piping, and RT on piping welds.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for the yards at Stord, Verdal, Ågotnes and the Møre cluster: PAUT and TOFD on thick structural and pressure welds, RT interpretation, MT on structural steel and VT. It suits jacket nodes, module steel, hull blocks and floating wind structures.

Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matching the crude and product tanks at Mongstad, Sture, Kårstø, Melkøya and coastal depots.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration habits and fundamentals, used by new entrants and by technicians moving into a new method.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection for the helicopter and fixed-wing maintenance that supports offshore logistics and Norwegian aviation: eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant and visual practice.

The twelve methods are PT, MT and VT; UT contact, PAUT, TOFD and RT; ET and MFL; and LRUT, IRIS and PMI, supported by 33 guided lessons.

Regulators and requirements Norwegian technicians meet

In Norway, NDT personnel are normally certified to EN ISO 9712 under the Nordtest scheme, run by accredited Nordic certification bodies, and offshore work follows NORSOK standards under oversight from Havtil, the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme and is not part of Nordtest or other EN ISO 9712 certification.

Personnel certification. The Nordtest scheme for examination and certification of NDT personnel, aligned with EN ISO 9712, is the main scheme in the Nordic countries, and certification is issued by accredited certification bodies. NORSOK fabrication and inspection standards, including NORSOK M-101 for structural steel fabrication and NORSOK M-601 for welding and inspection of piping, set requirements for NDT on offshore projects. US-owned assets, US OEM equipment and projects to ASME, API or AWS codes may also specify ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which is where Atlantis's ASNT experience is relevant.

Offshore regulator. The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway became Havtil (Havindustritilsynet), the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority, on 1 January 2024. It supervises safety and the working environment for petroleum activities on the shelf and certain onshore plants, and has responsibilities for offshore renewable energy.

Radiography. Industrial radiography is regulated by the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA), which sets requirements for the use of radiation sources and the competence of radiographers. The simulator's RT scenarios involve no source and do not count toward any radiation protection qualification.

Pressure equipment onshore. Pressure equipment is placed on the market under rules implementing the EU Pressure Equipment Directive, and onshore pressure equipment and hazardous installations fall under the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB). Confirm the current requirements for your installation with the relevant authority.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Norway

The short answer: trainees and apprentices get guided fundamentals, rotational technicians get rare-defect refreshers during their time onshore, and Level IIIs get objective crew benchmarking and scenario control across offshore and onshore teams.

Trainees and apprentices. Norway's apprenticeship system trains industrial technicians, welders and materials testers, and the offshore industry recruits heavily from it. New entrants need many repetitions before they are trusted on a platform. Guided lessons and NDT Lab and Welding Workshop jobs with instant scored feedback provide them.

Working technicians. Rotation work means long periods away from one method and long periods at home. A rope-access inspector who has been doing UT thickness for a hitch may need PAUT weld sizing or TOFD on the next job. Practising rare defects, such as fatigue cracks in nodes, lack of sidewall fusion, corrosion under insulation and exchanger tube pitting, during time onshore keeps those skills current.

Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs and inspection coordinators can assign scenario sets, compare performance across crews and installations, and spot gaps before a campaign. The results support their judgement; they do not replace procedures, NORSOK requirements or certification records.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant or renew Nordtest, EN ISO 9712 or ASNT qualifications, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that every scheme requires.

Under EN ISO 9712 and the Nordtest scheme, certification requires documented training, industrial experience and an examination including a practical part on real specimens, administered by an accredited certification body. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice sets training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens, and the employer certifies. A simulator builds familiarity and confidence; the formal steps remain.

Atlantis's training product follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A only and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility; Atlantis does not train toward Nordtest or other EN ISO 9712 certification. For Norwegian employers, ASNT-based training mainly matters for work to US codes or for US clients. See NDT training in Norway and SNT-TC-1A training and certification.

Rotations, remote bases and offshore campaigns: why Norwegian teams use virtual NDT training

Norwegian NDT work is highly mobile. Offshore rotations, campaigns on remote installations, yard projects that start and stop, and turnarounds at gas plants and Mongstad all pull technicians away from labs and specimens. A browser-based NDT simulator fits that pattern because practice happens wherever the technician is, including at home between hitches.

Offshore bed space and time on an installation are expensive; nobody wants to discover that an inspector has forgotten a setup step once they are on the platform. Practising scan plans, calibration and interpretation onshore before a campaign helps crews arrive ready. Yard projects ramp up quickly with large numbers of contract inspectors; a common set of scenarios gives the NDT coordinator a fast, objective view of who is ready for which welds.

Representative flawed specimens in duplex, super duplex, clad and thick carbon steel are expensive and quickly memorised. The simulator's job library keeps defects varied and lets Level IIIs assign different sets to different people.

The energy transition adds new work, from floating wind structures to carbon capture and storage infrastructure, and with it a need to train inspectors who come from oil and gas into new asset types. Scenario practice helps that transfer without taking people off billable work.

Bring Practical NDT to your Norwegian team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Access is by browser or app, so offshore and onshore staff use the same platform, and there is no physical centre to visit.

A rollout starts with a demo and a short scoping call on your methods, assets and crew levels. An offshore inspection contractor might focus on PAUT, LRUT, IRIS and corrosion mapping in the Oil & Gas Site; a yard on PAUT, TOFD and RT in the Welding Workshop; a terminal operator on MFL and shell thickness in the Storage Tank. Level IIIs then assign scenario sets and follow results.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Norway?

Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app and works anywhere in Norway with an internet connection, including at home between offshore rotations. There is no physical Atlantis centre in Norway.

Does Practical NDT count toward Nordtest or EN ISO 9712 certification?

No. It is practice only. Nordtest certification requires training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens, through an accredited certification body. The simulator helps you prepare.

Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?

It can help you build familiarity, speed and confidence with setups, scanning and interpretation before a practical exam. It does not replace the exam or any required hands-on hours.

Can offshore technicians use it during rotations?

Yes during time off, and offshore during downtime if the installation's connectivity and rules allow. Practising between hitches is one of the main reasons Norwegian employers look at it.

Does it cover NORSOK-style weld and piping inspection?

It covers the underlying skills: PAUT, TOFD, RT and MT on welds, corrosion mapping and guided-wave screening on piping. Acceptance criteria and procedures for a given project still come from the project specification and your Level III.

Does it include radiography?

Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not satisfy DSA requirements for radiographers.

Is it a phased array simulator?

Among other things, yes. It covers UT contact, PAUT and TOFD, plus IRIS for tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening, and surface, electromagnetic and PMI methods.

What experience level is it for?

All levels: guided fundamentals for apprentices and trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs and coordinators.

Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Norway?

Atlantis training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. It suits employers working to US codes or for US clients. It is not Nordtest training. See NDT training in Norway.
