NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in New Mexico

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. New Mexico is a clear example of why that matters. Its inspection work is split between remote oilfields in the southeast and northwest and a high-tech defence and research corridor along the Rio Grande, with long distances in between. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. You enter a virtual workplace, choose your equipment and complete a real inspection job on a realistic asset: a pipeline weld, a tank shell, a heat-exchanger bundle, a pressure vessel or an airframe component. Every job is scored when you finish, with clear feedback on what you found, what you missed and why. It works for every level, from a new hire in Hobbs to a Level III benchmarking a crew across the state.

New Mexico has become one of the two largest oil-producing states in the country, almost entirely because of the Delaware Basin, the western lobe of the Permian, in Lea and Eddy counties. The San Juan Basin in the northwest is a major natural gas region. The state also has a refinery at Artesia, potash mines near Carlsbad, a uranium enrichment plant near Eunice, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, national laboratories at Albuquerque and Los Alamos, several military bases and test ranges, and a growing aerospace and semiconductor sector around Albuquerque. Practical NDT gives technicians a way to keep their skills sharp across all of it. To see it on your own work, request a New Mexico demo.

New Mexico's NDT workforce and where the work is

The Permian in the southeast. Lea and Eddy counties, with Hobbs, Carlsbad, Artesia, Lovington and Eunice as the service towns, are where most of New Mexico's inspection hours are worked. The Delaware Basin's output depends on well pads, tank batteries, saltwater disposal systems, compressor stations, gas processing plants and a dense network of gathering and takeaway pipelines, with more being built. Inspection follows every stage. New pipelines and station piping need radiography and phased array on welds. Produced-water and sour-service systems need corrosion surveys and thickness monitoring. Gas plants need vessel and piping inspection, and tanks need shell and floor surveys. The refinery at Artesia adds turnaround work, including exchanger tube inspection, alloy verification and corrosion mapping. The work is remote and hot in summer, and crews often cover large distances each day.

Industry near Carlsbad and Eunice. The southeast also holds some less typical industrial sites. Potash mines near Carlsbad run hoists, conveyors, crushers and processing plants that need weld and fatigue inspection. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, a Department of Energy deep geologic repository east of Carlsbad, and the uranium enrichment facility near Eunice, which operates under a Nuclear Regulatory Commission licence, bring nuclear-sector quality expectations to the region.

The San Juan Basin in the northwest. Farmington, Aztec and Bloomfield serve the San Juan Basin, one of the country's long-established natural gas regions, including large coalbed methane production. Gathering systems, compression, gas processing and interstate pipelines need weld and corrosion inspection. The Four Corners area also has a coal-fired power plant, with boiler tube and pressure-part inspection during outages.

The Rio Grande corridor and the south. Albuquerque is home to Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory, plus aerospace, defence and semiconductor manufacturing around the metro and in Rio Rancho. Los Alamos National Laboratory is to the north. In the south, White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base and Spaceport America support testing and aerospace activity. This part of the state needs precision inspection: eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant work on aerospace and defence hardware, and weld inspection on specialized fabrications.

Practical NDT by city in New Mexico

Each New Mexico city below has its own Practical NDT page with local detail. This table maps local work to Practical NDT environments and methods.

Albuquerque. Albuquerque's inspection work is shaped by aerospace, defence and research. Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory sit at the centre of a cluster of contractors, machine shops and precision manufacturers, and semiconductor fabrication in Rio Rancho adds high-purity process systems. Technicians here work to exacting procedures on high-value parts. Eddy current, UT and penetrant inspection in the Aircraft Hangar, and calibration and reference-block work in the NDT Lab, are the best preparation. The Welding Workshop covers specialized fabrication and structural welds.

Farmington. Farmington serves the San Juan Basin, where natural gas production, coalbed methane, gathering systems, compressor stations and processing plants make up most of the inspection demand. A lot of the infrastructure is decades old, so corrosion surveys, guided-wave screening on long lines and weld inspection on repairs and tie-ins are routine. The Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop cover that work, and the Oil & Gas Site's tube jobs are relevant to power plant and gas plant outages.

Hobbs. Hobbs is the oilfield capital of Lea County, at the centre of Delaware Basin activity. Its inspection companies work on well pads, tank batteries, gas plants, compressor stations and pipelines. The typical Hobbs technician needs to be versatile, with UT thickness, radiography and phased array on welds, tank surveys and sometimes PMI on alloy components. The nearby enrichment plant at Eunice adds nuclear-sector quality expectations. Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank and Welding Workshop jobs together cover nearly all of it.

Carlsbad. Carlsbad combines Delaware Basin oil and gas with potash mining and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, and the Artesia refinery is up the Pecos valley. Technicians here may work on a mine hoist, a gas plant vessel, a refinery exchanger and a tank farm within a few weeks. IRIS and PMI in the Oil & Gas Site, tank surveys, and MT and UT on welded mining structures in the Welding Workshop fit that mix.

Environments and methods that match New Mexico work

Practical NDT has five workplace environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. Here is how they map to New Mexico's industries.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). This process-plant environment is the best match for the Permian and San Juan basins. Practise contact UT thickness surveys on production, gathering and produced-water piping, and LRUT guided-wave screening on long lines and road crossings. On new pipeline and station welds, practise RT interpretation, PAUT and TOFD. For gas plants, the Artesia refinery and power plant outages, there are IRIS jobs on heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification on components and spools, and corrosion mapping on vessels and headers.

Storage Tank. Run UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. The Permian has a large number of production, saltwater and terminal tanks, and floor corrosion is a constant concern, so tank inspection skills are in steady demand.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT, PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, PT and VT. This covers pipeline construction across both basins, station and plant fabrication, mining equipment repair near Carlsbad and specialized fabrication in Albuquerque. Practise finding lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity, slag and cracking.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, UT and PT. This fits Albuquerque's aerospace and defence work, including the Air Force presence at Kirtland and Holloman, and the test and launch activity in southern New Mexico.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, DAC and TCG, probe selection and sizing. This is the place for trainees to build a solid foundation and for precision-manufacturing inspectors to refresh their set-up skills.

Regulators and requirements New Mexico technicians meet

Radiography. New Mexico is an NRC Agreement State. The New Mexico Environment Department's Radiation Control Bureau licenses and inspects radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines in the state, including industrial radiography operations. Radiographers must meet the certification, training and supervision requirements in the state's radiation protection rules, and out-of-state radiography companies working in the Permian need to follow the state's reciprocity process. Practical NDT's RT scenarios cover set-up and interpretation practice only. They do not count toward radiation safety training or supervised hours, and they involve no real sources. Some federal sites follow their own rules: the Eunice enrichment plant is licensed directly by the NRC, and the national laboratories and WIPP operate under Department of Energy oversight.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The Construction Industries Division of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, through its Mechanical Bureau, regulates boilers and pressure vessels under the state boiler rules. Those rules cover permits, inspection, certificates and licensing of installers and repair organizations, with construction to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Refinery and gas plant inspection programmes are generally built on API 510, 570 and 653, with ASME Section V methods.

Oil, gas and pipelines. The Oil Conservation Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department regulates wells and oilfield facilities. The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission's Pipeline Safety Bureau oversees intrastate pipeline safety within the federal PHMSA framework of 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. Pipeline weld acceptance commonly follows API 1104, and structural steel follows AWS D1.1.

Personnel certification. Most New Mexico service companies and operators certify technicians through an employer written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the framework Atlantis training supports. Aerospace and defence employers may work to NAS 410, and federal nuclear and laboratory sites have their own qualification programmes. These are market context, meaning what particular employers may require. Practical NDT is practice for any of them and certifies no one.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in New Mexico

New trainees. Permian inspection companies hire steadily, often bringing people in from other oilfield jobs, welding, the military or straight from school, and then training them quickly. Classroom time can be short and experienced mentors are spread thin across a large area. The guided fundamentals path gives trainees a structured start. It explains how each method works, how to calibrate and how to scan, then moves them to scored jobs with realistic defects. That gives them many repetitions before they touch a real weld or a client's asset, and it prepares them for the classroom and experience hours certification requires.

Working technicians. Oilfield work in New Mexico rises and falls with activity. A technician might spend months on pipeline radiography, then move to tank work, then to a gas plant outage. Skills you do not use fade, and Practical NDT lets you keep the less-used ones sharp between jobs: TOFD before a pipeline project, IRIS before an outage, tank floor screening before a terminal job, eddy current before an aerospace contract in Albuquerque. It runs on a laptop in a motel in Hobbs as easily as at home.

Level IIIs and team leads. A Level III overseeing crews in the Permian, the San Juan Basin and Albuquerque rarely sees them work side by side. Practical NDT provides an objective, repeatable benchmark. You can build scenario sets that reflect your procedures, assign them, see who misses which defect types or leaves coverage gaps, and target refresher work. It supports your written practice and practical exams without replacing them.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and not a substitute for the practical examination. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the employer written practice built on it, a technician needs documented classroom training, documented on-the-job experience and a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment, administered under the employer's Level III. A simulator cannot provide any of those. Practical NDT does not award hours or issue certificates, and it does not count toward radiographer certification or any site-specific qualification at federal facilities.

Its value is readiness. People who have worked through many scored scenarios arrive at the practical exam knowing what real indications look like and how to set up and cover a part properly. Technicians who refresh before a job start faster. Supervisors get a clearer picture of their crews. For formal training toward SNT-TC-1A certification, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. Practical NDT is a complement to formal training, never a replacement.

Bring Practical NDT to your New Mexico team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. A New Mexico demo starts with your work. Permian and San Juan service crews usually start with the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, pipeline contractors with the Welding Workshop, refinery and gas plant inspectors with IRIS, PMI and corrosion mapping, and Albuquerque aerospace and defence shops with the Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab. Then we plan rollout: trainee logins, refresher sets timed around project starts and outages, and scenario assignment and benchmarking for your Level III.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an NDT simulator I can use in the Permian without going to a lab?

Yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so technicians in Hobbs, Carlsbad, Artesia or anywhere in New Mexico can practise 3D inspection jobs across five environments and twelve methods, with scored feedback on every job.

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. SNT-TC-1A requires a practical exam on real specimens plus documented training and experience hours. Practical NDT is practice and readiness. It certifies no one and awards no hours.

Can I practise tank and pipeline inspection for Delaware Basin work?

Yes. The Storage Tank environment covers shell UT and MFL floor screening, and the Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop cover UT thickness, LRUT screening, and RT, PAUT and TOFD on welds.

Is it useful for aerospace and defence inspection in Albuquerque?

Yes, as practice. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs covering eddy current, UT and penetrant on airframe and component inspection. Your employer's NAS 410 or site-specific programme still governs qualification.

Does RT practice count toward radiographer requirements in New Mexico?

No. Radiographer requirements under New Mexico's radiation rules involve radiation safety training, certification and supervised experience with real sources. Practical NDT only lets you practise set-up and interpretation, with no radiation involved.
