NDT Simulator and Practical Training in Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock does not look like a classic inspection town from the highway, but its NDT work is unusually varied. At Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, business jets are completed, serviced and supported in one of the largest aircraft completion facilities in the country. Up the road in Jacksonville, Little Rock Air Force Base is home to the largest C-130 fleet in the world and the primary Hercules training base for the Department of Defense. Down at the Port of Little Rock on the Arkansas River, large-diameter welded line pipe is manufactured for oil, gas and infrastructure projects. A short drive west, Arkansas Nuclear One generates power on Lake Dardanelle. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT brings those very different inspection problems into one immersive, 3D, game-like platform. Trainees and working technicians log in from a browser or app, choose an environment, and inspect realistic virtual parts with instant scored feedback, from eddy current on an airframe to phased array on a pipe weld.

Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters for Little Rock’s Aerospace and Pipe Workforce

Aviation inspection and pipe mill inspection sit at opposite ends of the NDT spectrum. Aerospace work is about finding very small defects in thin, often non-ferrous structure: fatigue cracks at fastener holes, corrosion under lap joints, disbonds and damage in components that are inspected on tight maintenance intervals and against strict procedures. The technician is working to aircraft maintenance manuals and structural repair documents, and the margin for a missed crack is unforgiving. Pipe mill work is about volume and repeatability: long seam welds on heavy-wall pipe, automated and manual ultrasonic inspection, radiographic checks and the discipline of confirming that every length meets its specification before it ships.

What they share is the problem of perishable interpretation skill. An eddy current technician who normally inspects one family of aircraft may be asked to support a different structure. A mill UT operator who mostly watches automated systems may suddenly need to prove out a manual technique on a questionable indication. Real practice specimens for these situations are specialised and costly, and taking a production part or a mill length offline to practise on is not realistic. Practical NDT gives Little Rock technicians a place to rehearse the uncommon cases, repeatedly and safely, without pulling equipment or reference standards away from production and without any radiation exposure for RT interpretation work.

Matching Practical NDT Environments to Central Arkansas

Practical NDT is built around five environments. The NDT Lab has bench specimens and reference blocks. The Welding Workshop has weld coupons and fabrication joints. The Aircraft Hangar covers airframe and component inspection. The Oil & Gas Site covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. For Little Rock, the Aircraft Hangar and the Welding Workshop are the natural anchors.

The Aircraft Hangar carries 54 jobs, the most of any environment for a single industry, and it is where business aviation and military airlift technicians will spend their time. Eddy current scenarios on airframe and component structure, surface methods on fittings and attachments, and visual inspection discipline all live there. The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, suits pipe mill and fabrication staff who need to rehearse ultrasonic and radiographic weld inspection. The NDT Lab, with its own 52 bench jobs, is the right starting point for new hires coming out of local technical programs who need calibration and fundamentals first. Technicians who travel to south Arkansas refining work or to pipeline projects can also use the 73-job Oil & Gas Site to stay current on corrosion and plant inspection.

Methods You Can Practice: Eddy Current, Ultrasonic Testing Simulator and Phased Array

The platform covers twelve methods: PT, MT and VT on the surface side; contact UT, phased array UT, TOFD and RT for volumetric work; ET and MFL for electromagnetic inspection; LRUT guided-wave screening; IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes; and PMI for alloy verification. For aircraft technicians, eddy current is the centrepiece. You practise probe handling, frequency and phase decisions, and the difference between a genuine crack response, an edge effect and lift-off noise around fastener holes and in thin skins. Penetrant scenarios rehearse the full process on components, from surface preparation and dwell through to interpretation, and visual scenarios build the habit of a methodical sweep before instruments come out.

For pipe mill and pipeline staff, the ultrasonic testing simulator side covers angle-beam inspection of longitudinal seam welds, and the phased array simulator lets you set up and interpret sectorial scans on weld geometries, characterising lack of fusion, porosity, slag and cracking. TOFD scenarios add diffraction-based sizing. RT scenarios let you interpret weld radiographs without scheduling any exposure. MT practice covers surface-breaking flaws on ferritic welds and attachments, and PMI scenarios rehearse alloy verification, which matters wherever materials must be confirmed before they go into service.

Built for Every Skill Level, from Trainee to Level III

Practical NDT adjusts to who is using it. New trainees follow 33 guided lessons that introduce each method in a logical sequence and give immediate feedback on every step, so the difference between a correct setup and a sloppy one is obvious before bad habits form. That is useful in central Arkansas, where many people entering the trade come from general aviation maintenance, welding or manufacturing backgrounds and need a structured bridge into inspection.

Working technicians use the platform for refreshers. An experienced aircraft technician can rehearse rare crack configurations before a heavy check. A mill UT operator can practise manual follow-up on an automated indication. For Level IIIs and team leads, Practical NDT supports building and assigning scenario sets, benchmarking crews objectively on the same jobs, and seeing where coverage is thin across the team. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training, so scenarios reflect how inspections are actually run and judged.

NDT Practical Exam Preparation and Formal ASNT Training

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool, not a certification. It does not issue any level, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer’s written practice require. Under SNT-TC-1A, your employer defines the training, experience and examination steps, and the practical exam uses real equipment and real specimens under the oversight of the responsible Level III. A score in the simulator is not a substitute for any of it.

What the simulator does is shorten the distance between classroom and competent field work. Candidates who have already rehearsed an eddy current scan, a phased array setup or a radiograph interpretation many times arrive at their hands-on sessions and practical exams better prepared, and they use scarce lab time well. That is why Practical NDT is positioned as a complement to our NDT training and certification programs. Aerospace employers around Little Rock may also require qualification under aerospace personnel standards such as NAS 410, and military maintenance organisations follow their own technical orders. Those requirements are market context set by local employers; Practical NDT supports practice but does not train toward, administer or certify to them.

Little Rock’s Industrial Anchors: Airport, Air Base, River Port and Power

The inspection economy of central Arkansas is built on a handful of distinct anchors. At Clinton National Airport, Dassault Falcon Jet’s completion center has operated since the 1970s and has been expanding to support newer Falcon models, which sustains a deep regional pool of aviation maintenance and inspection skills. In Jacksonville, Little Rock Air Force Base trains C-130 aircrew from across the U.S. military, and the airlift mission generates ongoing maintenance and inspection work on and around the base. These are cited as the industries and sites that define local NDT demand, not as Atlantis customers.

At the Port of Little Rock on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, Welspun Tubular has operated a line pipe mill since 2007 and announced expansions in 2024 and 2025, including a longitudinally submerged arc welded pipe mill aimed at oil and gas, carbon capture, LNG export and hydrogen pipeline markets. Pipe mills live and die by weld inspection, and new capacity means new operators and inspectors who need to learn fast. Further afield, Arkansas Nuclear One near Russellville is the state’s only nuclear plant, and outages there draw inspection specialists from across the region. In south Arkansas, the El Dorado area has a long refining history, and pipeline and gas work runs across the state.

For radiography, Arkansas is an NRC Agreement State, so industrial radiography licensing and inspection for radioactive materials run through the Arkansas Department of Health’s Radiation Control program. Radiographers must meet those requirements in the real world; Practical NDT lets them sharpen film and digital image interpretation without any source being involved.

NDT Training Online in Arkansas: Practice That Travels With You

Arkansas technicians often cover a lot of ground. A mill inspector may live in the Little Rock suburbs, an aviation technician may commute from Conway or Benton, and pipeline and outage workers may spend weeks in other states. Because Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, practice goes where they go. A trainee can work a guided lesson in the evening, a technician can rehearse a rare eddy current case before a heavy check, and a team lead can assign the same scenario set to people on different shifts or sites.

For employers, shared scenarios make readiness visible. When a whole crew works the same jobs, the Level III can see who reads phased array images confidently, who hesitates on eddy current phase angles, and who needs more supervised time on real parts before taking on acceptance responsibility. It supports, rather than replaces, the supervised experience and certification steps already in your written practice.
