NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Italy

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Italy, with one of Europe's deepest benches of pressure-equipment fabricators, shipyards, refineries and aerospace plants, is a natural place to use it. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician walks into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and gets a score as soon as the job is closed. Italian NDT work runs from the valve, forging and heat-exchanger shops of Lombardy to the cruise-ship and naval yards of Monfalcone, Marghera, Genoa and La Spezia, from the refineries and petrochemical poles of Sicily, Sardinia and the Po Valley to the aerostructures and engine plants of Turin, Naples and Puglia, and from offshore gas off Ravenna to the steelworks of Taranto and Terni. Few technicians touch every method every month, and specimens with the right defects are never easy to borrow. The simulator gives trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs a way to stay sharp between jobs without booking lab time or consuming specimens.

This is the Italy hub for Practical NDT. It covers where Italian NDT work happens region by region, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto that work, the regulators and certification schemes Italian technicians deal with, and an honest explanation of what a simulator can and cannot do for certification. To see it with your own jobs in mind, request a Practical NDT demo for Italy.

Italy's NDT workforce and where the work is

Short answer: Italian NDT work is concentrated in five systems, namely fabrication of pressure equipment, valves and forgings in the north; shipbuilding along the Ligurian, Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coasts; refining, petrochemicals and gas infrastructure, especially in the south and islands; aerospace in Piedmont, Campania, Lombardy and Puglia; and heavy steel and power generation. Each region has its own mix of methods.

Lombardy and the fabrication north. Milan sits at the centre of one of Europe's largest clusters of engineering and fabrication firms. Around Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco and the Varese area are manufacturers of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, columns, reactors, industrial valves, flanges, fittings and open-die and closed-die forgings, much of it built to ASME and API codes for export to oil, gas and petrochemical projects worldwide. This is where Italian NDT looks most like a manufacturing quality department: RT and UT of longitudinal and circumferential welds, PAUT and TOFD replacing film radiography on thick sections, UT of forgings and castings, MT and PT on finished parts, PMI on alloy materials and VT throughout. The Po Valley also hosts a major refinery south of Pavia and chemical plants that add in-service inspection work. Varese has a long helicopter and aerospace tradition.

Piedmont. Turin is Italy's historic automotive capital and an aerospace centre, with military and civil aircraft production, aero-engine component manufacturing in the Turin area and space systems integration. Aerospace NDT here means penetrant and eddy current inspection, UT of composites and metallic parts, and radiography of castings, all under strict aerospace procedures. Automotive and component suppliers add high-volume ET, UT and MT.

Liguria. Genoa combines one of the Mediterranean's busiest ports, ship construction and repair, naval shipbuilding along the Riviera at Sestri Ponente and Riva Trigoso, gas turbine and power equipment manufacturing, and steel processing. La Spezia adds a naval base, naval and superyacht yards and the Panigaglia LNG terminal. Hull weld inspection, power-equipment manufacturing NDT and terminal work make Liguria a varied market.

The north-east and Adriatic. Monfalcone near Trieste is home to Italy's largest shipyard, building large cruise ships, and Porto Marghera in Venice hosts another major yard together with an industrial port area that includes a biorefinery and chemical plants. Trieste is the terminal of the transalpine oil pipeline serving central Europe, and the offshore Adriatic LNG terminal sits off the Veneto coast near Porto Levante. Further south, Ravenna is the base for Italy's Adriatic offshore gas industry, with its platform fabrication and maintenance contractors, and since May 2025 a floating storage and regasification unit has operated off its coast. Shipyard PAUT and TOFD, offshore structural and pipeline work, and terminal tank inspection all feature here. Emilia-Romagna's motor-valley manufacturing and its packaging and machinery industries add component NDT.

Central Italy. Tuscany hosts turbomachinery and compressor manufacturing in the Florence and Massa areas, a refinery and an offshore regasification terminal near Livorno, steel at Piombino and a floating LNG unit in its port. Terni in Umbria is a stainless steel and forging centre. The Marche coast has a refinery near Ancona and a shipyard in Ancona itself. Lazio adds power generation around Civitavecchia and aerospace and defence electronics around Rome.

The south. Taranto has one of Europe's largest integrated steelworks and a refinery, and nearby Grottaglie produces large composite fuselage sections. Brindisi hosts aero-engine maintenance and petrochemical plants. Naples and Pomigliano d'Arco are aerostructures centres, and Castellammare di Stabia has a historic shipyard. In Basilicata, the Val d'Agri and Tempa Rossa oil fields are the largest onshore oil developments in western Europe, with treatment centres, pipelines and tank farms.

Sicily and Sardinia. The Priolo, Augusta and Melilli industrial pole near Syracuse is one of the largest refining and petrochemical areas in the Mediterranean, and Sicily also has refineries at Milazzo and a biorefinery at Gela. Sardinia has a large refinery at Sarroch near Cagliari and a chemical area at Porto Torres. Turnarounds in these plants call for large inspection crews for exchangers, piping, vessels, fired heaters and tanks.

Practical NDT by region in Italy

Atlantis does not yet have Practical NDT pages for individual Italian cities, so this hub covers the main centres directly. The table maps each to the simulator environments and methods that fit its everyday jobs.

Milan and Lombardy. Shop NDT on export pressure equipment is volume work with strict documentation. Technicians move between RT interpretation on longitudinal seams, PAUT and TOFD on thick circumferential welds, UT of forgings and MT and PT on nozzles and attachments. The Welding Workshop and NDT Lab cover almost all of it, and PMI jobs reinforce alloy verification on stainless, duplex and nickel alloy components. Atlantis also has an ASNT NDT training page for Milan for employers who work to US codes.

Turin and Piedmont. Aerospace and engine component inspection rewards careful penetrant technique, eddy current sensitivity to small surface cracks, and disciplined interpretation. The Aircraft Hangar environment and the NDT Lab are the natural fit, and automotive suppliers can use the same ET and UT jobs.

Genoa and La Spezia. Ship and naval construction depends on reliable weld inspection, increasingly with PAUT and TOFD alongside UT, MT and RT. The Welding Workshop rehearses these, while the Storage Tank environment fits terminal and port tank work.

Monfalcone, Venice and Trieste. Large cruise-ship blocks mean long runs of butt and fillet welds and steady demand for UT, PAUT and MT, while the industrial port areas and pipeline terminal add tank surveys and process-plant work.

Ravenna. Offshore gas maintenance involves corrosion monitoring on topsides piping and vessels, structural weld inspection and pipeline screening, so the Oil & Gas Site environment, with PAUT corrosion mapping and LRUT guided-wave screening, is the core.

Central Italy. Turbomachinery and forging plants lean on UT, PT and MT of high-integrity components, while Livorno's refining and terminal work maps to IRIS, PMI and tank jobs.

The south. Steel plant maintenance, refinery turnarounds and aerostructure production sit side by side, so crews in Puglia and Campania may need the Aircraft Hangar for composites and airframe parts and the Oil & Gas Site for exchangers and piping in the same year. Basilicata's oil field facilities map to corrosion, screening and tank work.

Sicily and Sardinia. Island refinery turnarounds are some of the largest inspection events in Italy. IRIS on exchanger bundles, PMI on alloy circuits, TOFD and PAUT on vessel welds and MFL floor screening on tanks are the methods to have ready.

Environments and methods that match Italian work

Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. In Italy the Welding Workshop and NDT Lab serve the fabrication and shipbuilding sectors, the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank serve refining, petrochemicals and gas infrastructure, and the Aircraft Hangar serves aerospace.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT film and digital image interpretation, UT and PAUT flaw detection and sizing, TOFD, MT and VT against acceptance criteria. This is the workhorse for Lombardy fabricators, shipyards and pipeline and structural fabricators.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, probe handling, sensitivity, scan coverage and indication recognition. It suits new trainees, forging and casting inspectors, and anyone preparing for a practical examination.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). Weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant: contact UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD on pressure welds, IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening on long pipe runs and PMI alloy verification. It matches refinery and petrochemical turnarounds in Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, Tuscany and the Po Valley, as well as offshore gas and onshore oil facilities.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT, fitting Italy's aerostructures, helicopter, engine and maintenance sectors.

Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, for refinery tank farms, oil terminals, LNG and chemical storage and port depots.

Across the twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) cover finished parts and structural welds; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld and corrosion assessment; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve aerospace, tubes and tank floors; and the specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect what refinery integrity programmes and alloy fabricators ask for.

Regulators and requirements Italian technicians meet

Short answer: Italian NDT personnel are normally certified to UNI EN ISO 9712 through accredited certification bodies, pressure equipment follows the PED for manufacture and DM 329/2004 for use, and industrial radiography falls under Italy's radiation protection law, Legislative Decree 101/2020. Practical NDT is practice for any of these frameworks and replaces none of them.

Personnel certification. Italy applies UNI EN ISO 9712. Certification is issued by bodies accredited by ACCREDIA, Italy's national accreditation body, to ISO/IEC 17024; CICPnD is one long-established example, and other accredited bodies also operate. The Italian NDT association, AIPnD, represents the technical community. Many Italian fabricators building to ASME codes for export also keep written practices based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, often alongside ISO 9712 certificates, because their clients ask for them. That is market context only. Atlantis training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, and Atlantis does not train toward, certify or administer UNI EN ISO 9712 certification. Practical NDT is practice for whichever scheme you work under.

Pressure equipment. New pressure equipment is placed on the market under the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, implemented in Italian law. Equipment in use is governed by Ministerial Decree 329/2004, which covers commissioning, periodic requalification and repairs. Commissioning is declared to INAIL and the competent local health authority (ASL), and periodic verification is carried out by the public bodies or by authorised inspection bodies depending on region and equipment. Confirm current arrangements with INAIL, your ASL or your inspection body.

Radiation safety. Legislative Decree 101/2020, which implements the EU Basic Safety Standards Directive, governs ionising radiation. The national inspectorate for nuclear safety and radiation protection, ISIN, is the national regulator, and radiography practices need the appropriate notification or authorisation and the involvement of a qualified radiation protection expert (esperto di radioprotezione). Practical NDT's RT jobs involve no radiation source and count toward no radiation protection requirement.

Codes and standards in daily use. Italian fabrication commonly references EN 13445 and EN 13480, the EN ISO weld testing and acceptance standards, and ASME Section V and VIII and API standards for export and refinery work. Shipyards work to classification society rules. Mentioned as context only.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Italy

Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user, each with a distinct challenge in Italy.

New trainees. Many Italian trainees come from welding, mechanical or technical institute backgrounds and join a fabricator or service company that needs them productive quickly. The hardest thing to get early is enough hands-on time. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab let a trainee repeat calibration, angle-beam setup, scan coverage and indication interpretation with instant feedback, so the first time on a real block is not the first attempt. It is good NDT practical exam preparation, with the clear understanding that the real exam is taken on real specimens.

Working technicians. Italian work is cyclical. Refinery turnarounds in Sicily and Sardinia, shipyard production peaks and export fabrication deadlines all pull technicians toward one method for weeks at a time. A technician who has spent a season on RT film may be asked to run PAUT on a thick nozzle weld or IRIS on an exchanger bundle. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments, covering lack of fusion, laminations, stress corrosion cracking, tube pitting and similar, help them arrive ready.

Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a campaign. When a turnaround or a shipyard peak brings in contract technicians from across Italy and abroad, a consistent scenario set gives a like-for-like view of who is ready for which method, and helps check that new procedures are understood before they reach production.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification. It does not grant a level under UNI EN ISO 9712, ASNT SNT-TC-1A or any employer's written practice, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens those schemes require. It does not satisfy any radiation protection requirement under Legislative Decree 101/2020. What it adds is realistic repetition: more chances to set up, scan, interpret and get feedback than a lab timetable or a specimen cabinet allows. It complements formal NDT training and on-the-job experience; the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.

Why virtual NDT training suits Italian employers

Direct answer: Italian NDT is spread across thousands of small and medium firms, islands and long coastlines, and much of the work arrives in peaks. A browser-based ultrasonic testing simulator and phased array simulator let those firms give staff structured practice without dedicating a lab, a supervisor and a set of flawed specimens to each session.

Italy's fabrication sector is built on small and medium enterprises. Many employ a handful of NDT technicians who are fully booked on production, and few own a library of specimens with rare flaw types. Service companies on the islands and in the south often send crews long distances for turnarounds, and shipyards draw on subcontractors from across the country. That makes it hard to organise consistent practice or to compare crews fairly.

With the simulator, technicians can practise at home, in the shop office or between production runs, subject to company IT rules. Supervisors see scores rather than self-reported confidence. A Level III can push one scenario set to every crew working a turnaround, whether they come from Syracuse, Taranto or Milan. None of this replaces real equipment time, but it makes real time more productive. The simulator's jobs and feedback are presented in English; ask during the demo if Italian-language support matters for your team.

Who in Italy typically looks at Practical NDT

Groups that tend to find a simulator useful in Italy include pressure equipment, valve and forging manufacturers with in-house NDT; inspection service companies that staff refinery and petrochemical turnarounds; shipyards and their subcontractors; aerospace manufacturers and maintenance organisations; offshore and onshore oil and gas contractors; technical institutes and training providers that want more practice time for students; and individual technicians preparing for an exam or returning to a method. These are industry descriptions, not a customer list; Atlantis does not name customers on this page.

For Italian employers who build to ASME and API codes or serve US-owned plants, Atlantis also offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A aligned NDT training online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility, and Level III consulting on procedures, techniques and written practices. The Atlantis ERP for Italy can record UNI EN ISO 9712 certificates alongside ASNT-based ones for companies managing mixed crews; see also the Genoa ERP page.
