NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Germany
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Germany is a country where steady, repeatable practice matters a great deal. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician steps into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and gets a score as soon as the job is closed. Germany's inspection work is unusually broad: automotive and supplier plants in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony, rail vehicle and wheelset manufacturing, the chemical parks of the Rhine and central Germany, refineries and import terminals on the North Sea coast, aircraft assembly and maintenance around Hamburg, shipbuilding on the Baltic and North Sea, a fast-growing offshore wind supply chain, and a power sector that has moved from nuclear operation to decommissioning while building new gas, hydrogen and grid infrastructure. Practical NDT gives technicians a way to keep hands and eyes sharp between real jobs, at any level from first-week trainee to working Level III, without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
This page is the Germany hub for Practical NDT. It covers where German NDT work actually happens, how the simulator's five environments and twelve methods map onto that work, the certification and regulatory framework German technicians work inside, and an honest account of what a simulator can and cannot do. If you want to see it with your own team's jobs in mind, request a Practical NDT demo for Germany.
Germany's NDT workforce and where the work is
Germany's NDT work follows its industrial geography: series manufacturing in the south, chemicals and steel along the Rhine and Ruhr, energy and ports in the north, and a dense network of fabricators, test laboratories and inspection bodies everywhere in between. Each region asks for a different mix of methods, so a technician in Stuttgart has a very different week from one in Wilhelmshaven or Leuna.
The south: automotive, machinery and aerospace. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg hold much of Germany's car and truck production, its powertrain and chassis suppliers, and a deep base of machine-tool, gear and bearing manufacturers. NDT here is production-line work: eddy current and magnetic particle testing of forged and machined parts, ultrasonic testing of welds and castings, penetrant testing of aluminium and safety-critical components, and visual inspection tied to quality systems. Southern Germany also has a significant aerospace and defence cluster, with engine, helicopter and military aircraft work around Munich and the Danube, which brings composite inspection and aerospace NDT personnel rules into play.
The Rhine, Ruhr and chemical belt. North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhine valley carry Germany's heavy industry: steelworks around Duisburg, refineries in the Cologne and Gelsenkirchen areas, and large chemical sites along the river, with Ludwigshafen in Rhineland-Palatinate one of the biggest integrated chemical complexes in the world. Chemical and refinery work means pressure vessels, heat exchangers, alloy piping, furnaces and tank farms, with planned shutdowns that bring large inspection crews on site. Corrosion mapping, exchanger tube testing, alloy verification and weld inspection on repairs are routine.
Central Germany. The Leuna and Schkopau area in Saxony-Anhalt and the wider central German chemical triangle combine a refinery, chemical parks and industrial gas production. The east also has a refinery at Schwedt on the Oder, which has had to adapt its crude supply, plus pipeline and storage infrastructure.
The north coast: ports, energy and ships. Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, Wilhelmshaven and the Kiel area concentrate shipbuilding and ship repair, naval yards, oil and chemical terminals, the floating LNG import terminals added from 2022 at sites such as Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel, and the ports and fabrication yards that serve offshore wind in the German Bight and the Baltic. Hamburg is also one of the world's main civil aircraft production and maintenance centres. Work here ranges from PAUT and TOFD on thick structural welds to storage tank surveys and airframe eddy current inspection.
Rail, energy and grids. Germany manufactures and maintains rail vehicles, bogies and wheelsets, which carry their own NDT requirements for wheels, axles and welded structures. In power, the last nuclear plants stopped operating in April 2023 and are now in decommissioning, while gas plants, district heating, the planned hydrogen core network and onshore and offshore grid connections create new inspection work on pipelines, vessels and structural steel.
Practical NDT by city in Germany
Germany's port city of Hamburg already has its own Practical NDT page. The table below links it and adds the other major industrial centres, mapped to the simulator environments and methods that fit their work.
| City or area | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Hamburg | Civil aircraft assembly and MRO, shipbuilding and repair, port terminals, refining | Aircraft Hangar, Welding Workshop, Storage Tank; ET, UT, PAUT, PT |
| Ludwigshafen and the Rhine-Neckar | Integrated chemical production, process equipment, tank farms | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; IRIS, PMI, UT, MFL |
| Leuna and central Germany | Refining, chemical parks, industrial gases | Oil & Gas Site, NDT Lab; UT, RT, PMI, LRUT |
| Wilhelmshaven and the Jade | Crude and LNG import terminals, tank storage, port energy projects | Storage Tank, Oil & Gas Site; MFL, UT thickness, LRUT |
| Stuttgart and Munich regions | Automotive, suppliers, machinery, aerospace engines and helicopters | NDT Lab, Aircraft Hangar; ET, MT, PT, UT |
| Ruhr and Lower Rhine | Steel, refining, power and district heating, fabrication | Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site; UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT |
Hamburg. Hamburg combines one of the largest civil aircraft final assembly and cabin completion sites in Europe with a busy commercial port, shipyards, ship repair docks and a refinery on the Elbe. Aircraft work leans on eddy current around fastener holes, ultrasonic bond and thickness checks and penetrant on components, so the Aircraft Hangar environment is the natural start. Yard and port work calls for weld inspection and tank surveys. The Practical NDT Hamburg page has more detail, and Atlantis also has an NDT training page for Hamburg.
Ludwigshafen and the Rhine-Neckar. A chemical site of this scale contains thousands of pressure vessels, columns, exchangers and kilometres of alloy and carbon steel piping. Exchanger bundles make IRIS and eddy current tube testing a staple, mixed-alloy piping makes PMI part of almost every repair, and tank farms need floor screening. The Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments carry most of that practice. See the Ludwigshafen digital twin page for how Atlantis approaches asset data there.
Leuna and central Germany. Leuna's refinery and chemical park and the neighbouring sites around Schkopau and Bitterfeld bring turnaround-driven inspection: thickness surveys, weld radiography on repairs, alloy verification and guided-wave screening on pipe racks and road crossings. New technicians recruited in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony can build fundamentals in the NDT Lab before going on site. See the Leuna ERP page for the inspection-company side.
Wilhelmshaven. Germany's deepest-water port handles crude oil, petroleum products and LNG, with large tank storage and a growing set of energy import projects. Storage tanks dominate: MFL floor screening, UT shell thickness and weld inspection on tank repairs. Pipelines running inland add LRUT practice. See the Wilhelmshaven digital twin page.
Stuttgart and Munich regions. Automotive and supplier quality departments depend on fast, consistent ET, MT and PT on high-volume parts, while the aerospace and engine cluster around Munich adds composite and component inspection. The NDT Lab's bench specimens and the Aircraft Hangar fit this mix well, and they let a quality team run the same scenario across shifts.
Ruhr and Lower Rhine. Steel, fabrication, power and district heating work means a steady flow of welds: UT, PAUT and TOFD on thick sections, RT on piping, MT on structural steel. The Welding Workshop environment is the closest match.
Environments and methods that match German work
The simulator's five environments and twelve methods line up closely with the main strands of German industry. The short answer is: automotive and rail favour the NDT Lab, aerospace favours the Aircraft Hangar, chemicals and refining favour the Oil & Gas Site, terminals favour the Storage Tank, and shipbuilding, steel and wind fabrication favour the Welding Workshop.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks are where calibration habits are formed. For German automotive suppliers and rail component makers, the lab environment is where a technician practises eddy current on machined parts, MT on forgings, PT on castings and UT on bar and plate. It is also the right place for apprentices and career changers to learn instrument setup before they touch a production line.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints cover the core of German heavy fabrication: shipyard block welds, steel structures for bridges and halls, offshore wind monopiles, transition pieces and jacket nodes, pressure-equipment fabrication to EN 13445 or AD 2000, and welded rail vehicle structures. PAUT and TOFD on thick welds, RT film or digital image interpretation, MT on fillet welds and VT are all practised here.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection fits Hamburg, Bremen and the southern aerospace cluster: eddy current around fastener holes and on wheels, ultrasonic thickness and bond checks, penetrant on components, and visual inspection of structures.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The largest scenario set covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. For the Rhine chemical belt, Leuna, the Ruhr refineries and the coastal terminals, it is where technicians practise IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger tubes, PMI alloy verification, corrosion mapping with UT and PAUT, LRUT guided-wave screening on pipe runs and RT on piping welds.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank match the tank farms at Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg, the Rhine ports and inland refineries.
Across all environments the twelve methods are PT, MT and VT (surface); UT contact, PAUT, TOFD and RT (volumetric); ET and MFL (electromagnetic); and LRUT, IRIS and PMI. 33 guided lessons support the jobs for people who are new to a method.
Regulators and requirements German technicians meet
In Germany, NDT personnel are normally certified to DIN EN ISO 9712, and DGZfP, the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing, operates a widely used national personnel certification body. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme; it is not part of DGZfP certification and does not replace its examinations.
Personnel certification. Most German employers, inspection bodies and customers expect EN ISO 9712 certificates by method, level and industry sector. Aerospace NDT personnel are commonly qualified under EN 4179, usually through an employer's written practice and a national aerospace NDT board structure, and rail has its own qualification rules for wheelset and vehicle inspection staff. US-owned plants, US OEM supply chains and projects built to ASME, API or AWS codes may instead or additionally ask for ASNT SNT-TC-1A or ASNT certification, which is where Atlantis's ASNT expertise is relevant.
Pressure equipment. New pressure equipment is placed on the market under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, with design and fabrication typically to EN 13445 or the AD 2000 rules. In-service inspection of equipment requiring monitoring falls under the Industrial Safety Regulation (Betriebssicherheitsverordnung), with periodic inspections by approved inspection bodies (zugelassene Überwachungsstellen). NDT findings feed those inspections, so test quality matters.
Radiography. Industrial radiography is regulated under the Radiation Protection Act (Strahlenschutzgesetz) and the Radiation Protection Ordinance (Strahlenschutzverordnung). Licences and supervision are handled by the radiation protection authorities of the federal states, and radiographers need the required radiation protection qualification (Fachkunde) in addition to their NDT certification. The simulator's RT scenarios involve no source and no radiation; they train technique choice and image interpretation only.
Codes in daily use. German technicians commonly work to EN ISO 17635 and the EN ISO 17640, 10675, 17636 and 13588 family for welds, to EN 10228 and EN 10160 for forgings and plate, and to customer and OEM specifications in automotive and aerospace. Offshore wind and oil and gas jobs bring their own project specifications, often referencing DNV or NORSOK standards.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Germany
Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user, and German employers usually have all three on the same payroll. The direct answer: trainees get guided fundamentals, working technicians get rare-defect refreshers between jobs, and Level IIIs get a tool to build scenario sets and benchmark crews objectively.
Trainees and apprentices. Germany's dual vocational system produces materials testers (Werkstoffprüfer) and other technical apprentices who combine school with company training. The simulator gives them more repetitions than a lab can easily schedule: guided lessons, then jobs in the NDT Lab and Welding Workshop with instant scored feedback on setup, coverage and interpretation. Career changers and technicians moving into a new method get the same structured start.
Working technicians. A technician who spends months on automotive ET may suddenly be asked to help on a chemical plant shutdown; a shipyard UT operator may not have seen a particular crack morphology in a year. The simulator lets them rehearse rare and hard-to-source defects, such as stress corrosion cracking, lack of sidewall fusion, hydrogen cracking or exchanger tube pitting, between real assignments. That matters in Germany, where many inspection companies move staff between sectors.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs and NDT supervisors can build and assign scenario sets, compare results across crews or shifts, and find coverage gaps, for example a team that sizes well with PAUT but misinterprets TOFD lateral wave disturbances. It does not replace the Level III's own judgement, procedures or examinations; it gives them consistent, objective data on how their people perform on the same tasks.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant or renew any EN ISO 9712, DGZfP, EN 4179 or ASNT qualification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that every scheme requires.
Under EN ISO 9712, a candidate needs documented training, industrial experience and a qualification examination with general, specific and practical parts, conducted by or under an accredited certification body. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice sets training hours, experience and examinations, including a practical examination on real specimens, and the employer certifies the person. A simulator can help build the familiarity and confidence that make those exams and the first weeks on a real site go better, but it cannot stand in for them.
Atlantis's own training product follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A only and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility; Atlantis does not train toward DGZfP or other EN ISO 9712 certification. For German companies, ASNT-based training is mainly relevant where work is done to US codes, for US-owned plants, or for US OEM customers. See NDT training and SNT-TC-1A training and certification for details.
Shift patterns, shutdowns and skilled-worker shortages: why German teams use virtual NDT training
Germany has a shortage of skilled technical workers, and NDT is no exception. Employers recruit apprentices, retrain staff from other trades and bring in technicians from other EU countries, and all of them need practice time that real specimens and laboratory slots cannot always supply. A browser-based NDT simulator gives that practice wherever the person is.
Production plants run in shifts, and quality departments find it hard to pull people off the line for training. A virtual NDT training session can be done in a short block at the start or end of a shift. Chemical and refinery shutdowns compress a year's worth of inspection into a few intense weeks; teams that have rehearsed exchanger, alloy and corrosion work beforehand arrive ready. Offshore wind and shipyard projects run on tight schedules where a weld rejected late is expensive; PAUT and TOFD practice before the project starts helps operators get consistent quickly.
Specimens with real, well-characterised flaws are expensive to make and quickly become familiar. Once a team has seen a flawed block a few times, it stops being a test. The simulator's job library keeps the defects fresh, and Level IIIs can assign different sets to different people.
Finally, German companies take documentation seriously. Practice results in the simulator give supervisors a record of who has practised what, which can support internal competence discussions, though it is not a substitute for the qualification records your certification scheme or written practice requires.
Bring Practical NDT to your German team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Getting started in Germany is straightforward because there is nothing to install on site and no physical centre to visit: technicians use a browser or app.
A typical rollout starts with a demo, then a short scoping conversation about your sector, methods and crew levels. For an automotive supplier that might mean ET, MT and PT jobs in the NDT Lab; for a chemical site, IRIS, PMI and corrosion work in the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank; for a shipyard or wind fabricator, PAUT, TOFD and RT in the Welding Workshop; for an MRO, the Aircraft Hangar. Level IIIs then assign scenario sets and track results.
The offer is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, with a quote on request. Book a Practical NDT demo for your German team, read the Practical NDT overview, or write to info@atlantisndt.com. Companies that also need inspection-company software can look at Atlantis ERP in Germany.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Germany?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app, so it works anywhere in Germany with an internet connection, from Hamburg to Munich. There is no physical Atlantis centre in Germany; access is online.
Does Practical NDT count toward DGZfP or EN ISO 9712 certification?
No. It is practice only. EN ISO 9712 certification requires training, experience and an examination, including a practical exam on real specimens, through an accredited certification body. The simulator helps you prepare.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
It can help you build familiarity, speed and confidence with setups, scanning and interpretation before a practical exam. It does not replace the exam or the hands-on hours your scheme or employer requires.
Is the simulator available in German?
Ask during the demo. Language options and customisation for German-speaking crews are discussed during scoping.
Which German industries is it most useful for?
Automotive and suppliers, rail, aerospace manufacturing and MRO, chemicals and refining, tank terminals and LNG import, shipbuilding, offshore wind fabrication, steel and power. Ask for a demo mapped to your sector.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not satisfy any radiation protection qualification (Fachkunde) under German radiation protection law.
Is it a phased array or ultrasonic testing simulator?
Both, among others. It covers UT contact, PAUT and TOFD, plus IRIS for tubes and LRUT guided-wave screening, alongside surface, electromagnetic and PMI methods.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for apprentices and trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs and team leads.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Germany?
Atlantis training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. It suits German employers working to US codes or for US clients. It is not DGZfP or EN ISO 9712 training. See NDT training.
