NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in France
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and France is a country where the demand for well-practised inspectors is unusually concentrated in two very exacting industries: nuclear power and aerospace. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. Technicians walk into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, pick a job, set up the technique, scan or interpret, and receive a score the moment the job is closed. Around those two pillars France adds refining and petrochemicals at Fos-Lavéra, the Seine estuary and Donges, steel and LNG at Dunkirk, a chemical valley south of Lyon, naval and commercial shipbuilding on the Atlantic and Channel coasts, offshore wind farms now operating off Brittany and Normandy, and rail, automotive and heavy engineering across the country. Practical NDT lets technicians keep their hands and eyes sharp between real jobs at any level, from first-week trainee to working Level III, without booking lab time or using up flawed specimens.
This page is the France hub for Practical NDT. It explains where French NDT work actually happens, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto it, which certification and regulatory frameworks French technicians work inside, and what a simulator honestly can and cannot do. France's NDT workforce and where the work is
French NDT work clusters around the nuclear fleet, the aerospace corridor from Toulouse to Bordeaux and the Paris region, the Mediterranean and Seine refining and petrochemical hubs, the northern steel and energy coast, and the Atlantic shipyards. Each cluster has its own method mix and its own customer specifications.
Nuclear power across the regions. France generates most of its electricity from a fleet of more than fifty pressurised water reactors operated by EDF, spread along rivers and coasts from Gravelines in the north to Tricastin in the Rhône valley and Blayais on the Gironde. Flamanville 3, an EPR, was connected to the grid in late 2024, and the government has backed a programme of new EPR2 reactors. Outages and the long-term life-extension programme known as the grand carénage generate a large volume of inspection: ultrasonic and eddy current examinations of welds, piping and steam generator tubes, radiography, surface methods and visual inspection, carried out by EDF teams and by a large supplier base. The discovery of stress corrosion cracking in certain safety-injection piping in 2021 and 2022 led to extensive checks across the fleet and underlined how much depends on reliable ultrasonic detection and sizing. Fuel-cycle facilities in the Rhône valley and on the Cotentin peninsula, and naval nuclear work at Cherbourg and Brest, add further specialised demand.
Aerospace: Toulouse, Bordeaux, Paris region. Toulouse is one of the world's two great centres of civil airliner assembly, surrounded by structure, systems and engine suppliers in Occitanie. Bordeaux and the wider Nouvelle-Aquitaine region host business jet, military aircraft, space and solid-propulsion work. The Paris region and the Seine valley carry engine manufacturing, helicopter work further south, and the maintenance bases of the main airports. Aerospace NDT is heavy in eddy current, ultrasonic inspection of composites and metallic parts, penetrant and visual work, all under tight customer and authority control.
Refining and petrochemicals. The Fos-sur-Mer and Étang de Berre complex near Marseille, the Lavéra petrochemical site, the Gonfreville and Port-Jérôme refineries in the Seine estuary near Le Havre, Donges on the Loire estuary, Feyzin in the Lyon chemical valley, and Dunkirk's energy coast with its LNG terminal together form France's process industry backbone. Shutdowns there involve exchanger tube testing, corrosion mapping, alloy verification and tank inspection.
Shipbuilding and offshore wind. Saint-Nazaire builds some of the largest cruise ships in the world and has become a base for offshore wind substations and foundations; Lorient, Brest and Cherbourg build and maintain naval vessels and submarines. France's first commercial offshore wind farms, off Saint-Nazaire, Fécamp and Saint-Brieuc, are now operating, with more under construction and planned. That brings PAUT, TOFD and RT on thick structural welds.
Steel, rail and heavy engineering. Steelmaking at Dunkirk and Fos, rail rolling stock and component plants in Hauts-de-France and eastern France, automotive plants across several regions, and pressure-equipment and boiler fabricators complete the picture.
Practical NDT by region in France
France does not yet have city-level Practical NDT pages, so this table maps the main industrial centres to the environments and methods that fit, and links the existing Atlantis pages for those places where they exist.
| City or area | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Toulouse and Occitanie | Airliner assembly, aerostructures, engines, space | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, UT, PAUT, PT, VT |
| Bordeaux and Nouvelle-Aquitaine | Business and military jets, space and propulsion, Blayais nuclear site | Aircraft Hangar, Welding Workshop; ET, UT, RT |
| Marseille and Fos-Étang de Berre | Refining, petrochemicals, steel, LNG, port | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; IRIS, PMI, UT, MFL, LRUT |
| Le Havre and the Seine estuary | Refining, petrochemicals, port, offshore wind | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; IRIS, PMI, MFL, UT |
| Paris region | Engines, aerospace MRO, rail, engineering head offices | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, UT, PT |
| Saint-Nazaire and the Loire estuary | Cruise shipbuilding, offshore wind structures, aerostructures, Donges refinery | Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site; PAUT, TOFD, RT, MT |
| Lyon and the Rhône valley | Chemical valley, Feyzin refinery, nuclear fleet and fuel cycle | Oil & Gas Site, NDT Lab; UT, ET, RT, PMI |
| Dunkirk and the north coast | Steel, LNG terminal, Gravelines nuclear plant | Welding Workshop, Storage Tank; UT, MT, MFL |
Toulouse and Occitanie. Final assembly lines, aerostructure suppliers and engine and systems firms make Toulouse the heart of French aerospace NDT. Eddy current around fasteners and on bores, ultrasonic inspection of composite panels and metallic parts, and penetrant on machined components are daily work. The Aircraft Hangar environment is the obvious starting point; the NDT Lab supports newcomers learning instrument setup.
Bordeaux and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Business and military aircraft, space and propulsion work bring aerospace inspection, while the Blayais nuclear plant on the Gironde estuary adds outage work. Technicians who move between both benefit from practising ET and UT in the hangar and weld inspection in the Welding Workshop.
Marseille and Fos. The Fos and Étang de Berre complex includes refineries, petrochemical crackers, chemical plants, a steelworks, LNG terminals and large tank farms. That is the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank in real life: IRIS on exchangers, PMI on alloy piping, MFL on tank floors, LRUT on pipe racks. Atlantis has an NDT training page for Marseille.
Le Havre and the Seine estuary. France's largest refining and petrochemical cluster sits between Le Havre and Port-Jérôme, alongside a major container port and offshore wind logistics. Turnaround crews practise exchanger tube testing, corrosion mapping and tank surveys. See the Le Havre digital twin page and Le Havre ERP page.
Paris region. Engine plants, MRO bases at the main airports, rail engineering and the head offices of many inspection and engineering firms make the Paris region a training and coordination hub. See the Paris NDT training page.
Saint-Nazaire. Large cruise ship blocks, offshore wind substations and aerostructure work share the same estuary. PAUT and TOFD on thick welds and RT interpretation are the core practice, done in the Welding Workshop.
Lyon and the Rhône valley. The chemical valley south of Lyon, the Feyzin refinery and the nuclear plants and fuel-cycle sites along the Rhône combine process plant work with nuclear examinations, so a mix of Oil & Gas Site and NDT Lab practice fits.
Dunkirk. Steelmaking, an LNG terminal and the Gravelines nuclear plant make Dunkirk a mixed industrial coast where weld, plate and tank inspection all matter.
Environments and methods that match French work
The short answer: aerospace maps to the Aircraft Hangar, refining and chemicals to the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, shipbuilding and offshore wind to the Welding Workshop, and nuclear and manufacturing to the NDT Lab plus volumetric weld practice. All twelve methods are available in every rollout.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection for Toulouse, Bordeaux and Paris-region aerospace: eddy current around fastener holes and on wheels, ultrasonic thickness and bond checks, penetrant on components and structured visual inspection. It is where aerospace trainees build the habits that EN 4179-based written practices expect.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, sensitivity setting and fundamental technique. Nuclear suppliers and manufacturing quality teams use it for UT on plate, bar and forgings, ET on tubes and machined parts, and MT and PT on components.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for Saint-Nazaire, Brest, Cherbourg and the offshore wind supply chain, and for pressure-equipment fabricators: PAUT, TOFD, RT interpretation, MT and VT. Nuclear piping and component weld examinations rely on the same core skills of detection, characterisation and sizing.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The largest scenario set covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant: IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification, UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, LRUT guided-wave screening, RT on piping. It suits Fos, Lavéra, the Seine estuary, Donges, Feyzin and Dunkirk.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matching the large terminals and tank farms at Fos, Le Havre, Donges and Dunkirk.
The twelve methods are PT, MT and VT; UT contact, PAUT, TOFD and RT; ET and MFL; and LRUT, IRIS and PMI, supported by 33 guided lessons.
Regulators and requirements French technicians meet
In France, NDT personnel are normally certified to NF EN ISO 9712 through COFREND, the French Confederation for Non-Destructive Testing, which runs sector-based certification schemes. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme and is not part of COFREND certification.
Personnel certification. COFREND certification by method, level and sector is the national reference for industry and for much of the nuclear and process work. Aerospace NDT personnel are typically qualified under EN 4179 through their employer's written practice, with national aerospace arrangements behind it. Nuclear operators and their suppliers also apply their own qualification requirements for specific examinations and qualified procedures. Projects for US-owned plants, US OEMs or work to ASME, API and AWS codes may additionally specify ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which is where Atlantis's ASNT experience is relevant.
Nuclear and radiation regulation. Since 1 January 2025, nuclear safety and radiation protection in France have been overseen by the ASNR (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire et de radioprotection), formed by merging the ASN and the IRSN. Industrial radiography is subject to radiation protection rules, and operators of industrial radiography and gamma radiography equipment must hold the CAMARI certificate of aptitude in addition to their NDT certification. Nuclear pressure equipment follows its own regulatory regime, and nuclear components are commonly designed and built to RCC-M. The simulator's RT scenarios involve no source and do not count toward CAMARI or any radiation protection qualification.
Pressure equipment. Conventional pressure equipment is placed on the market under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, with in-service monitoring, periodic inspection and requalification under French pressure-equipment regulations overseen by the regional environment and industry directorates (DREAL) and carried out with notified or authorised bodies. EN 13445 and CODAP are common construction codes.
Codes in daily use. French technicians work to the EN ISO weld testing family (17635, 17640, 17636, 10675, 13588), to RCC-M and RSE-M in nuclear, to aerospace customer specifications, and to project specifications for offshore wind and oil and gas.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in France
The short answer: trainees in French vocational and alternance programmes get guided fundamentals, working technicians get rare-defect refreshers between outages and production campaigns, and Level IIIs get objective crew benchmarking and scenario control.
Trainees and apprentices. France trains many technicians through alternance (work-study) and technical diplomas, and the nuclear and aerospace industries have both expanded recruitment. New entrants need repetitions they cannot always get on scarce lab specimens. Guided lessons, then NDT Lab and Welding Workshop jobs with instant feedback, give them a structured way to build technique before they are assessed for real.
Working technicians. Outage work is seasonal and intense; a technician may perform a particular examination only during a few weeks each year. Aerospace technicians may specialise on one structure for months. The simulator lets them rehearse rare and hard-to-find indications, such as stress corrosion cracking, lack of fusion, tube wall loss or fatigue cracks at fastener holes, before the next campaign.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs and supervisors can assign scenario sets, compare results across teams and sites, and spot weaknesses before an outage or production ramp-up. The data supports their judgement; it does not replace their procedures, qualification files or examinations.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification. It does not grant, renew or substitute for COFREND, EN ISO 9712, EN 4179, CAMARI or ASNT qualifications, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that every one of these schemes requires.
Under EN ISO 9712, certification requires documented training, industrial experience and an examination including a practical part on real specimens, administered under an accredited certification body such as COFREND. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice sets the training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens, and the employer certifies. A simulator builds familiarity and confidence; the formal process remains.
Atlantis's training product follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A only and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. Atlantis does not train toward COFREND or other EN ISO 9712 certification. For French employers, ASNT-based training is mainly useful for work to US codes, for US-owned facilities or for US OEM customers. See NDT training and SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Outages, ramp-ups and scarce specimens: why French teams use virtual NDT training
France's two biggest NDT customers, nuclear and aerospace, both demand very high consistency and both have been recruiting heavily. Nuclear new build and life extension, and airliner production ramp-ups, need more qualified inspectors than the existing pool, while experienced staff retire. A browser-based NDT simulator helps employers add practice capacity without adding lab space.
Nuclear outages compress inspection into tight windows, often far from home bases, with strict access and dose management. Rehearsing the logic of an examination beforehand, from setup to scan plan to indication characterisation, helps crews arrive ready. Aerospace production and MRO run in shifts with little slack; short virtual sessions fit around them.
Flawed specimens with known, documented defects are expensive and quickly memorised. In nuclear work in particular, representative specimens can be hard to obtain. The simulator's job library keeps scenarios varied, and Level IIIs can assign different sets to different people so results stay meaningful.
The same applies on the process side: Fos, Le Havre and Donges shutdowns bring contractors from all over France and abroad. A common set of practice scenarios gives a supervisor a quick, objective view of who is ready for which task.
Bring Practical NDT to your French team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Technicians use a browser or app, so there is nothing to install on site and no physical centre to visit.
A rollout starts with a demo and a short scoping call on your sector, methods and crew levels. An aerospace supplier might focus on ET, UT and PT in the Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab; a refinery contractor on IRIS, PMI and tank work in the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank; a shipyard or offshore wind fabricator on PAUT, TOFD and RT in the Welding Workshop; a nuclear supplier on UT, ET and weld examinations. Language options for French-speaking crews are discussed during scoping.
The offer is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, with a quote on request. Book a Practical NDT demo for your French team, read the Practical NDT overview, or write to info@atlantisndt.com. Inspection companies can also look at Atlantis ERP in France.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in France?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app and works anywhere in France with an internet connection. There is no physical Atlantis centre in France; access is online.
Does Practical NDT count toward COFREND certification?
No. It is practice only. COFREND certification under EN ISO 9712 requires training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens. The simulator helps you prepare.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
It can help you build familiarity, speed and confidence with setups, scanning and interpretation before a practical exam. It does not replace the exam or any required hands-on hours.
Is it useful for nuclear outage work?
Yes for the underlying skills: UT detection and sizing, ET on tubes, weld examination logic and RT interpretation. Nuclear-specific qualified procedures and qualification requirements still come from the operator, your employer and your Level III.
Is it useful for aerospace NDT in Toulouse or Bordeaux?
Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment covers eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant and visual practice on airframe structures and components. It complements, and does not replace, EN 4179 qualification under your employer's written practice.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not count toward the CAMARI certificate.
Is the simulator available in French?
Ask during the demo; language options are discussed during scoping.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for trainees and alternance students, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs.
