NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Denmark
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Denmark is a country where that kind of flexible practice suits an unusual industrial mix. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician steps into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and gets a score the moment the job is closed. Denmark's NDT work is shaped by three things: the wind industry, in which Danish companies and ports have played a leading role for decades; the Danish sector of the North Sea, with its oil and gas fields and the redeveloped Tyra gas hub; and a compact but energy-intensive onshore industry of refineries, power and heat plants, district heating networks, cement, pharmaceuticals, food processing and shipbuilding heritage now turned to offshore fabrication. Practical NDT lets technicians keep their hands and eyes sharp between real jobs, at any level from first-week trainee to working Level III, without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
This page is the Denmark hub for Practical NDT. It covers where Danish NDT work actually happens, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto it, the certification and regulatory framework Danish technicians work inside, and an honest account of what a simulator can and cannot do. Denmark's NDT workforce and where the work is
Denmark's NDT work is concentrated on the west coast of Jutland around Esbjerg, in the wind manufacturing belt across Jutland and Funen, at the refinery and terminal towns of Fredericia and Kalundborg, and in the Copenhagen region. Offshore wind and North Sea oil and gas account for much of the specialised demand.
Esbjerg and the west coast. Esbjerg is Denmark's offshore capital. The port has served dozens of North Sea offshore wind projects as an installation and logistics base, and it is the supply and service hub for Danish oil and gas fields. Tyra, Denmark's largest gas field, located some 225 kilometres west of Esbjerg, was shut down in 2019 for a full redevelopment and resumed production in 2024 as a new offshore gas hub. Other fields and platforms in the Danish sector need ongoing integrity inspection, and some older facilities are moving toward decommissioning. The Thor offshore wind farm, Denmark's largest to date, is due to be installed from Esbjerg. Inspection companies, rope-access firms and offshore service contractors based in Esbjerg work on platforms, wind turbine foundations, towers, transition pieces and the vessels that install and service them.
Wind manufacturing across Jutland and Funen. Denmark is home to two of the world's largest wind turbine manufacturers and a long supply chain of tower, flange, foundation, casting and blade producers. Aalborg has blade production and a yard making transition pieces and foundations; the Lindø industrial port near Odense, a former shipyard, now fabricates and marshals offshore wind components; and towns across Jutland host factories and test centres. NDT here means weld inspection on towers and monopiles, ultrasonic inspection of large castings and forgings, and quality inspection of composite blades.
Refineries and terminals. Fredericia is the landing point for crude oil from the Danish North Sea and has a refinery and oil terminal, while Kalundborg on Zealand has a refinery inside an industrial symbiosis that also includes power generation and large pharmaceutical and biotech plants. Refinery turnarounds bring exchanger tube testing, alloy verification, corrosion mapping and tank inspection.
Power, heat and gas infrastructure. Denmark's combined heat and power plants, many converted from coal to biomass, waste-to-energy plants and very extensive district heating networks create steady demand for boiler tube, pressure part and pipe weld inspection. The Baltic Pipe gas link crossing Denmark to Poland, gas storage, planned hydrogen infrastructure and carbon capture and storage projects in the North Sea add pipeline and pressure equipment work.
Copenhagen and Zealand. Copenhagen Airport's maintenance operations, ferries and ports, bridges and tunnels including the major crossings to Sweden and between the Danish islands, and a cluster of engineering and testing organisations make the capital region a mixed market for aviation, structural and industrial NDT.
Practical NDT by region in Denmark
Denmark does not yet have city-level Practical NDT pages, so this table maps its main industrial centres to the environments and methods that fit. Danish crews often work across the North Sea basin, so neighbouring Practical NDT pages for Stavanger, Aberdeen, Hamburg and Rotterdam are linked below as well.
| City or area | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Esbjerg and the west coast | Offshore wind installation and service, North Sea oil and gas, Tyra, supply base | Oil & Gas Site, Welding Workshop; PAUT, TOFD, LRUT, UT, MT |
| Aalborg and North Jutland | Wind blades, transition pieces and foundations, cement, port | Welding Workshop, NDT Lab; PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT |
| Odense and Lindø | Offshore wind fabrication and marshalling, manufacturing | Welding Workshop; PAUT, TOFD, RT, VT |
| Fredericia and the Triangle Region | Crude oil landing, refining, terminal, chemicals | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; IRIS, PMI, MFL, UT |
| Kalundborg | Refining, power, pharmaceuticals and biotech | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, NDT Lab; IRIS, PMI, UT, PT |
| Aarhus and central Jutland | Wind turbine engineering, manufacturing, port | NDT Lab, Welding Workshop; UT, ET, MT, PT |
| Copenhagen and Zealand | Airport maintenance, district heating, bridges, engineering | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, UT, PT, VT |
Esbjerg. Two offshore industries share one port. Oil and gas platforms need corrosion mapping, guided-wave screening of risers and pipe runs, and weld inspection on modifications; wind foundations and towers need PAUT and TOFD on thick circumferential welds, MT on secondary steel, and UT on bolted flanges and structural details. The Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop cover both. North Sea neighbours have their own pages: Practical NDT Stavanger and Practical NDT Aberdeen.
Aalborg and North Jutland. Monopile and transition piece fabrication is thick-plate welding at scale, where PAUT and TOFD sizing and consistent coverage are what matter. Blade production adds composite quality inspection, and cement and port industry add maintenance work. The Welding Workshop is the main environment; the NDT Lab supports newcomers.
Odense and Lindø. The former shipyard site now fabricates and pre-assembles offshore wind structures, so weld inspection on large structures, with PAUT, TOFD, RT interpretation and VT, is the core practice set.
Fredericia. Crude from the North Sea arrives by pipeline to a terminal, refinery and tank farm. Exchanger tube testing with IRIS, PMI on alloy piping, MFL floor screening and shell thickness surveys are the practice priorities, matching the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments.
Kalundborg. A refinery, a power plant and large pharmaceutical and biotech production sites sit side by side. Refinery work is classic process plant inspection; pharmaceutical plants rely on stainless steel piping and vessels where PT, VT and weld UT matter.
Aarhus. Wind turbine engineering, manufacturing suppliers and a container port make central Jutland a mixed market for UT, ET, MT and PT on components.
Copenhagen. Airport maintenance brings eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant and visual inspection of aircraft, while district heating and the large bridge and tunnel crossings bring weld and structural work. For the German side of the Baltic and North Sea, see Practical NDT Hamburg; for the ARA port cluster, see Practical NDT Rotterdam.
Environments and methods that match Danish work
The short answer: offshore wind and fabrication map to the Welding Workshop, North Sea oil and gas and refineries to the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, aviation to the Aircraft Hangar, and manufacturing and component work to the NDT Lab. All twelve methods are available in every rollout.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for monopiles, transition pieces, jackets, towers, flanges and pressure equipment: PAUT and TOFD on thick sections, RT interpretation, MT on structural welds and VT. For Danish wind fabrication this is the most important environment.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The largest scenario set, covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. It matches North Sea topsides, the Fredericia and Kalundborg refineries, and power and heat plants: UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification and RT on piping.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matching the crude and product tanks at Fredericia, Kalundborg and coastal depots.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration habits and fundamentals, used by apprentices and by technicians moving into a new method, and by manufacturing quality teams inspecting castings, forgings and machined components.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection for Copenhagen and Billund airport maintenance and Danish helicopter operations supporting offshore work: eddy current, ultrasonic, penetrant and visual practice.
The twelve methods are PT, MT and VT; UT contact, PAUT, TOFD and RT; ET and MFL; and LRUT, IRIS and PMI, supported by 33 guided lessons.
Regulators and requirements Danish technicians meet
In Denmark, NDT personnel are normally certified to EN ISO 9712 under the Nordtest scheme, run by accredited Nordic certification bodies. Offshore oil and gas safety is supervised by the Danish Working Environment Authority. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme and is not part of Nordtest or other EN ISO 9712 certification.
Personnel certification. The Nordtest scheme for examination and certification of NDT personnel, aligned with EN ISO 9712, is the main scheme across the Nordic countries, with certificates issued by accredited certification bodies. Offshore wind and oil and gas projects often reference DNV standards and project specifications for NDT. US-owned assets, US OEM equipment and projects to ASME, API or AWS codes may also specify ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which is where Atlantis's ASNT experience is relevant.
Offshore oil and gas. The Danish Working Environment Authority is responsible for safety and health on offshore oil and gas installations, including review of the design of production facilities and pipelines and permits for operation, modification and decommissioning. The Danish Energy Agency handles licences, and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency handles the marine environment.
Pressure equipment. Pressure equipment is placed on the market under rules implementing the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, and in-service requirements for pressure equipment onshore come under the working environment rules administered by the Danish Working Environment Authority. Confirm the current inspection requirements for your installation with the authority or your inspection body.
Radiography. Use of radiation sources for industrial radiography requires authorisation under Danish radiation protection rules, administered by the radiation protection function of the Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen); confirm current requirements with the authority. The simulator's RT scenarios involve no source and do not count toward any radiation protection qualification.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Denmark
The short answer: apprentices and new entrants get guided fundamentals, working technicians get rare-defect refreshers between offshore and fabrication assignments, and Level IIIs get objective crew benchmarking and scenario control.
Trainees and apprentices. Denmark's vocational education system trains welders, industrial technicians and other skilled workers through combined school and company training, and the wind and offshore industries recruit heavily from it. NDT newcomers need repetitions that scarce specimens and busy labs cannot always provide. Guided lessons, then NDT Lab and Welding Workshop jobs with instant scored feedback, give them a structured start.
Working technicians. A technician may spend months on a single wind fabrication contract doing PAUT on circumferential welds, then move to a refinery turnaround or an offshore campaign. Practising rare and hard-to-source defects, such as lack of sidewall fusion, fatigue cracking at welded attachments, corrosion under insulation and exchanger tube pitting, keeps the other methods current.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs and QA managers can assign scenario sets, compare results across crews, suppliers and shifts, and find gaps before a fabrication campaign or installation season. The results support their judgement; they do not replace procedures, project specifications or certification records.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant or renew Nordtest, EN ISO 9712 or ASNT qualifications, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that every scheme requires.
Under EN ISO 9712 and the Nordtest scheme, certification requires documented training, industrial experience and an examination including a practical part on real specimens, administered by an accredited certification body. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice sets training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens, and the employer certifies. A simulator builds familiarity and confidence; the formal steps remain.
Atlantis's training product follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A only and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility; Atlantis does not train toward Nordtest or other EN ISO 9712 certification. For Danish employers, ASNT-based training mainly matters for work to US codes, for US-owned assets or for US clients. See NDT training and SNT-TC-1A training and certification.
Installation seasons, fabrication peaks and offshore hitches: why Danish teams use virtual NDT training
Danish NDT demand is lumpy. Offshore wind fabrication peaks when a large project is in production, installation seasons run from Esbjerg and other ports in concentrated windows, and North Sea work runs on rotations and campaigns. A browser-based NDT simulator lets employers add practice capacity in those peaks without adding lab space, and lets technicians practise wherever they are.
Wind monopiles and transition pieces involve very long, thick welds where consistent PAUT and TOFD coverage, setup and sizing are essential, and where a missed or mis-sized indication is costly to find later. Rehearsing setups and interpretation before a fabrication campaign helps new operators reach consistency quickly. Offshore campaigns on platforms and turbines are expensive per day; arriving well-practised matters.
Representative flawed specimens in thick plate, castings and forgings are expensive and quickly memorised. The simulator's job library keeps defects varied and lets Level IIIs assign different sets to different people, so results stay meaningful.
Many Danish technicians also work in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. A practice platform that goes wherever they go, and that a supervisor can use to benchmark crews from different countries on the same scenarios, fits that cross-border North Sea labour market well.
Bring Practical NDT to your Danish team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT. Access is by browser or app, so fabrication, offshore and plant staff use the same platform, and there is no physical centre to visit.
A rollout starts with a demo and a short scoping call on your methods, assets and crew levels. A wind fabricator might focus on PAUT, TOFD and MT in the Welding Workshop; an offshore service company on corrosion mapping, LRUT and weld inspection in the Oil & Gas Site; a refinery contractor on IRIS, PMI and tank work; an aviation maintenance team on the Aircraft Hangar. Level IIIs then assign scenario sets and follow results.
The offer is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, with a quote on request. Book a Practical NDT demo for your Danish team, read the Practical NDT overview, or write to info@atlantisndt.com.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Denmark?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app and works anywhere in Denmark with an internet connection, from Esbjerg to Copenhagen. There is no physical Atlantis centre in Denmark; access is online.
Does Practical NDT count toward Nordtest or EN ISO 9712 certification?
No. It is practice only. Nordtest certification requires training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens, through an accredited certification body. The simulator helps you prepare.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
It can help you build familiarity, speed and confidence with setups, scanning and interpretation before a practical exam. It does not replace the exam or any required hands-on hours.
Is it useful for offshore wind weld inspection?
Yes for the underlying skills: PAUT and TOFD on thick welds, RT interpretation, MT and VT. Acceptance criteria and procedures for a given project still come from the project specification and your Level III.
Is it useful for North Sea oil and gas work out of Esbjerg?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site covers corrosion mapping, guided-wave screening, exchanger tube testing, PMI and weld inspection in a process plant setting, which matches topsides and onshore terminal work.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not satisfy Danish radiation protection requirements for radiographers.
Is it an ultrasonic testing simulator?
Among other things, yes. It covers UT contact, PAUT and TOFD, plus IRIS for tubes and LRUT guided-wave screening, alongside surface, electromagnetic and PMI methods.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for apprentices and trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs and QA managers.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Denmark?
Atlantis training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. It suits employers working to US codes or for US clients. It is not Nordtest training. See NDT training.
