NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Colorado
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Colorado's mix of aerospace, energy and heavy industry makes it a natural fit. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like simulator that runs in a browser or app. Technicians enter a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank and work realistic inspection jobs on welds, pipe, pressure vessels, castings and airframe components, with instant scored feedback on every job. Colorado's economy spans some of the most demanding inspection sectors in the country: one of the largest aerospace and space industries of any state, concentrated along the Front Range from Denver to Colorado Springs; oil and gas production in the Denver-Julesburg Basin around Greeley and in the Piceance Basin around Grand Junction; the state's only petroleum refinery in Commerce City; a steel mill in Pueblo that rolls rail and produces seamless pipe; and a large military presence. In every one of those sectors, inspection quality depends on technicians who get enough hands-on practice. Practical NDT gives Colorado crews that practice at any skill level, without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
Colorado's NDT workforce and where the work is
Colorado's inspection work is spread along a few clear corridors, and each has its own flavour.
The Denver metro area. Denver and its suburbs are the commercial and industrial center of the state. The south metro area around Littleton and Centennial is home to major space and launch vehicle manufacturers and satellite builders, while Aurora hosts Buckley Space Force Base. Aerospace NDT here means ultrasonic inspection of composites and bonded structures, eddy current on metallic components, penetrant inspection and radiography of castings and welds, all to tight written procedures. North of downtown, the Commerce City area hosts Colorado's only petroleum refinery, along with fuel terminals and pipelines, which bring classic in-service inspection work. Denver is also a headquarters city for oil and gas operators, pipeline companies and engineering firms, and a regional base for inspection companies serving the Rocky Mountain region.
The northern Front Range and the DJ Basin. Weld County, centred on Greeley, is the heart of Colorado oil and gas production in the Denver-Julesburg Basin and one of the most productive counties in the country. Well pads, tank batteries, gathering lines, compressor stations, gas processing plants and pipelines create constant demand for weld inspection, thickness surveys and storage tank work. Agriculture and food processing add pressure equipment and refrigeration systems to the mix.
Colorado Springs and the southern Front Range. Colorado Springs is one of the most concentrated military and space communities in the country, with Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases, the US Air Force Academy and Fort Carson. Aerospace and defense contractors support them, and the city has a manufacturing base in electronics and precision components. Further south, Pueblo has a long heavy-industry history, with a steel mill producing rail and seamless tubular products, wind tower manufacturing, power generation and rail infrastructure.
The Western Slope. Grand Junction is the hub for western Colorado, serving natural gas production in the Piceance Basin, pipelines, gas processing and a history of uranium milling that has left a long legacy of federal remediation and monitoring work. Rugged terrain and long distances make it hard for technicians to reach a training lab, which is one reason browser-based practice matters here.
Power, water and infrastructure. Across the state, coal and natural gas power plants, hydroelectric and dam infrastructure, bridges and a growing wind and solar fleet add structural, boiler and weld inspection work that spans every region.
Practical NDT by city in Colorado
Each Colorado city below has its own Practical NDT page. The table maps each to the environments and methods that fit its real work.
| City | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Denver | Space and aerospace manufacturing, refining, energy headquarters | Aircraft Hangar, Oil & Gas Site; ET, UT, PAUT, PMI |
| Greeley | DJ Basin oil and gas, gathering and processing, food processing | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; UT, RT, MFL, LRUT |
| Colorado Springs | Space and military installations, defense contractors, precision manufacturing | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, UT, PT |
| Pueblo | Steel, rail and tubular products, wind towers, power generation | Welding Workshop, NDT Lab; UT, PAUT, MT, TOFD |
| Grand Junction | Piceance Basin gas, pipelines, energy services | Oil & Gas Site, Welding Workshop; UT, RT, MT, LRUT |
Denver brings together aerospace manufacturing in the south metro, refining and fuel terminals in Commerce City and the headquarters of energy companies downtown. Aerospace technicians work composites, bonded structures and precision metallic parts, where eddy current and ultrasonic practice in the Aircraft Hangar are most relevant. Refinery and terminal crews use the Oil & Gas Site for thickness surveys, exchanger tube inspection and PMI on alloy piping. Denver is also where many Level IIIs and NDT managers for the Rocky Mountain region are based, and scenario sets help them benchmark technicians across multiple sites and clients. The city's training and technical-college pipeline brings in new entrants who benefit from guided fundamentals.
Greeley is the service centre for Weld County and the DJ Basin. The everyday NDT work is on pipeline and gathering welds, pressure vessels and separators on well pads, compressor station piping and tank batteries. Radiography and UT of girth welds, UT thickness surveys and MFL tank floor screening are core skills, and LRUT screening is useful on long runs of above-ground pipe. The pace of production activity means technicians often move quickly between tasks, and practising the less common jobs keeps them ready. Food processing and agricultural industries add pressure equipment and refrigeration piping inspection.
Colorado Springs is shaped by its military and space installations, including Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases, the Air Force Academy and Fort Carson, and by the defense contractors and precision manufacturers that serve them. NDT work centres on aerospace and defense components, ground equipment and facility infrastructure. Eddy current, penetrant and ultrasonic practice in the Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab match this work, and the city's large veteran community includes many people moving into civilian NDT careers who benefit from structured fundamentals.
Pueblo is Colorado's steel city, with a mill producing rail and seamless tubular products, a wind tower manufacturing plant, power generation and rail infrastructure. Mill and tube inspection means ultrasonic and electromagnetic methods on long products, and tower manufacturing means UT, PAUT and TOFD on thick structural welds and MT on fillet welds. The Welding Workshop and NDT Lab cover these skills, and the town's industrial history gives it a strong base of fabrication and maintenance technicians who use the simulator to broaden into new methods.
Grand Junction serves the Western Slope and the Piceance Basin, where natural gas production, gathering, processing and pipelines dominate. Technicians often cover large territories across rugged country, so access to a training lab is limited. Weld inspection with RT and UT, MT on fabricated components and LRUT screening on pipe are practical skills, and the Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop provide realistic practice between field assignments. The region's history of uranium milling and ongoing federal legacy management also means radiation safety awareness is part of the local culture.
Environments and methods that match Colorado work
Practical NDT's five environments and twelve methods cover the full range of Colorado inspection work.
The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs, is a priority environment for Colorado given its aerospace, space and military concentration. Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT builds the precision and procedural discipline aerospace employers expect.
The Oil & Gas Site, with 73 jobs, fits the DJ and Piceance basins, gas processing plants and the Commerce City refinery. It covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice, including contact UT, PAUT, TOFD, IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening and PMI alloy verification.
The Storage Tank environment, with UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, maps directly to tank batteries across Weld County and to terminal and refinery tank farms.
The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs, supports Pueblo's tower and steel fabrication, pipeline construction and the state's many fabrication shops, with RT interpretation, UT and PAUT sizing, MT and VT against acceptance criteria.
The NDT Lab, with 52 jobs, builds fundamentals on bench specimens and reference blocks and is the natural starting point for trainees, students and veterans entering the field.
Across twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) build the base; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld and composite work; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve aerospace and tanks; and specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect what energy integrity programs require. 33 guided lessons connect them into a structured learning path.
Regulators and requirements Colorado technicians meet
Radiation safety. Colorado is an NRC Agreement State. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Radiation Program licenses, registers and inspects users of radioactive materials and x-ray equipment, including industrial radiography operations, and requires personnel dosimetry for radiographers. Industrial radiographers must meet radiation safety training and certification requirements before operating a source. Practical NDT's RT scenarios involve no radiation and do not count toward those requirements.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment's Division of Oil and Public Safety administers the state boiler and pressure vessel inspection programme. Codes commonly used include ASME Section V and VIII, the National Board Inspection Code, API 510 and 570, and ASME B31.3.
Oil, gas and pipelines. The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC), formerly the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, regulates oil and gas development, including facilities and flowlines. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission runs the state gas pipeline safety programme, working with federal PHMSA rules in 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195. API 1104 governs pipeline welding and its NDT acceptance criteria, and API 653 applies to aboveground storage tanks.
Aerospace. Aerospace employers commonly qualify NDT personnel to NAS 410, and space and defense programs apply their own procedure requirements. That is market context only.
Personnel qualification. Most Colorado industrial employers qualify technicians through written practices based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis's training aligns with SNT-TC-1A. If an employer also asks for ISO 9712 or NAS 410 qualifications, that is a local market requirement, not something Atlantis certifies. Practical NDT is useful practice under any scheme.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Colorado
New trainees. Colorado has a steady inflow of new NDT technicians from community colleges and technical schools, from the large military and veteran community around Colorado Springs and Denver, and from welding and machining backgrounds. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab let them practise calibration, probe handling, scan coverage and indication recognition repeatedly, with instant feedback, before their first real assignments.
Working technicians. A DJ Basin technician may spend months on pipeline RT and then be asked to run a tank floor MFL survey or a PAUT weld inspection. An aerospace technician may work one component family for a long stretch before switching programs. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments keep the less common skills current.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs in Colorado's aerospace and energy sectors can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a new program or campaign. The results give a consistent view across technicians working at different sites.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant a Level I, II or III, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice. It does not satisfy CDPHE radiographer requirements or any aerospace qualification scheme. It gives Colorado technicians more realistic repetitions before their practical exams and between jobs, and it complements formal NDT training and certification. The formal practical exam remains the step that counts.

Frequently asked questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical exam?
No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Certification under an SNT-TC-1A written practice still requires a practical exam on real specimens, and Colorado radiographers still need to meet CDPHE requirements.
Is it useful for aerospace inspection in Colorado?
Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment covers airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT, which matches much of the Front Range aerospace and defense work. Ask for an aerospace-focused demo.
What about oil and gas crews in the DJ Basin?
The Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments cover weld, corrosion, tube and screening jobs plus tank shell and floor surveys, the core of DJ Basin inspection work.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for trainees and veterans entering NDT, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and benchmarking for Level IIIs.
Can technicians practise remotely on the Western Slope?
Yes. It runs in a browser or app, so technicians far from a training lab can practise wherever they have a connection.
