NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Belgium
Belgium splits its NDT work between two very different industrial worlds. In Flanders, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges holds Europe's largest integrated chemical cluster, refineries and vast tank farms, with a steelworks and more chemicals at Ghent and an LNG terminal at Zeebrugge. In Wallonia, Liège and Charleroi anchor an aerospace industry that builds engine and airframe parts for the world's major aircraft programmes. Between them sit nuclear stations at Doel and Tihange, a dense gas transmission hub and a growing offshore wind sector off the coast. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator gives Belgian technicians in both worlds a place to practise. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app: a technician enters a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, sets up the technique, inspects, reports and receives a score when the job is closed. Trainees, working technicians and Level 3s can all use it, without reserving bench time or consuming a single physical specimen.
This hub covers all of Belgium. It sets out where the work is, which environments and methods match Belgian industry, how simulator practice relates to EN ISO 9712 and EN 4179 certification, and how to arrange a demo. The Antwerp page goes into more detail on the port.
Belgium's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: Belgian NDT work concentrates in the Antwerp port and chemical cluster, the Ghent canal zone, the Zeebrugge and coastal energy hub, the Doel and Tihange nuclear sites, and the Walloon aerospace and industrial belt around Liège, Charleroi and Hainaut, with Brussels as a base for engineering, aviation and certification activity.
Antwerp. The port of Antwerp, now part of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, hosts the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe. Refineries, steam crackers, base-chemical and polymer plants, industrial gas plants and some of Europe's largest independent tank terminals run along both banks of the Scheldt. A large new ethane cracker project has added years of heavy construction work on the left bank. The inspection workload is huge and continuous: in-service inspection of piping, vessels, exchangers and furnaces during turnarounds; tank shell and floor inspection at the terminals; alloy verification; and weld inspection on new construction and modifications. Contractors come from across Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany.
Ghent and the canal zone. The canal from Ghent to Terneuzen is lined with heavy industry, including a large integrated steelworks, chemical and bio-based plants, power generation and a car assembly plant. The port is part of North Sea Port, a cross-border port shared with Vlissingen and Terneuzen in the Netherlands. The steelworks brings structural, crane, gas-holder and vessel inspection, and the chemical plants bring classic plant inspection.
Zeebrugge, Ostend and the coast. Zeebrugge hosts a major LNG terminal and is a landing point for gas pipelines from Norway and the UK, making it one of Europe's important gas hubs. Ostend is the service base for Belgium's offshore wind farms in the North Sea, and an artificial energy island is under construction offshore to connect future wind capacity. Belgian dredging and marine contractors, among the largest in the world, build and maintain offshore infrastructure globally and employ inspection staff for their vessels and projects.
Nuclear: Doel and Tihange. Belgium's two nuclear sites are Doel, on the Scheldt near Antwerp, and Tihange, on the Meuse near Huy. Belgium's nuclear story is closely tied to NDT: in 2012, ultrasonic inspection of the reactor pressure vessels at Doel 3 and Tihange 2 revealed large numbers of hydrogen-flake indications, leading to years of analysis and eventually the permanent shutdown of both units. Several older units have since closed, Doel 4 and Tihange 3 continue under a life-extension programme, and Belgium's parliament repealed the 2003 nuclear phase-out law in 2025. Outage inspections at the operating units remain a significant source of qualified NDT work.
Liège. Liège is the centre of Wallonia's aerospace industry, with aero-engine compressor and module manufacturing around Herstal and Milmort, a major air cargo airport at Bierset and a long engineering tradition. The steel industry that once dominated the Meuse valley has largely closed, but fabrication, mechanical engineering and the Tihange site keep plant inspection work in the region.
Charleroi and Hainaut. The Gosselies area near Charleroi hosts aerostructures manufacturers producing wing and fuselage parts and assemblies, along with aviation maintenance. Hainaut also has a petrochemical site at Feluy, chemical plants at Tertre and a broad base of metalworking and fabrication companies.
Brussels and Flemish Brabant. Brussels Airport has aircraft maintenance and component operations, and many engineering firms, inspection bodies and certification organisations are based in and around the capital, including the Belgian NDT association BANT.
Practical NDT by city and region in Belgium
Short answer: Antwerp has its own Practical NDT page. The table below covers Antwerp and Belgium's other main clusters, with the environments and methods that fit each.
| City or region | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Antwerp | Chemicals, refining, tank storage, nuclear (Doel), construction | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, Welding Workshop; UT, PAUT, IRIS, PMI, MFL, TOFD |
| Ghent and the canal zone | Steel, chemicals, power, automotive | Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site; UT, MT, PAUT, PMI |
| Zeebrugge and Ostend | LNG, gas pipelines, offshore wind, marine contractors | Storage Tank, Oil & Gas Site, Welding Workshop; UT, LRUT, PAUT, TOFD |
| Liège and the Meuse valley | Aero-engines, air cargo, nuclear (Tihange), fabrication | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab, Welding Workshop; ET, PT, UT, RT |
| Charleroi and Hainaut | Aerostructures, petrochemicals, chemicals, metalworking | Aircraft Hangar, Oil & Gas Site; ET, UT, PT, PMI, IRIS |
| Brussels | Aviation maintenance, engineering and inspection offices | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, PT, UT, VT |
Antwerp is Belgium's largest pool of NDT work by a wide margin. Turnarounds at the refineries and crackers draw international crews for short, intense periods, and technicians need to be immediately productive on exchanger tubes, corroded piping, alloy lines and furnace components. The Oil & Gas Site environment, with 73 jobs, covers that work, including IRIS, PMI and LRUT screening. The terminals keep the Storage Tank environment busy with shell thickness and MFL floor screening practice, and new construction brings PAUT and TOFD weld inspection in the Welding Workshop. Atlantis also has an ASNT SNT-TC-1A training page for Antwerp for employers who work to US codes.
Ghent and the canal zone combine steel and chemicals. Steelworks inspection involves welded structures, cranes and runways, vessels, gas systems and rotating equipment, where MT and UT are the core methods. The chemical and power plants along the canal add plant inspection practice in the Oil & Gas Site.
Zeebrugge and Ostend are about gas and the sea. LNG tanks, cryogenic piping and pipeline reception facilities suit the Storage Tank and Oil & Gas Site environments, including LRUT screening of long pipe runs. Offshore wind foundations and marine structures bring thick-section weld inspection with PAUT and TOFD.
Liège is the aerospace capital of Wallonia. Aero-engine compressor parts and modules are inspected with penetrant, eddy current, ultrasound and visual methods to tight acceptance criteria, which maps to the Aircraft Hangar environment and its 54 jobs and to NDT Lab fundamentals. Fabrication and the nearby nuclear site add weld inspection.
Charleroi and Hainaut combine aerostructures with petrochemicals. Aerostructure inspection relies on UT of composite and metallic parts and ET around fasteners. The Feluy and Tertre sites need plant inspection with UT, IRIS and PMI.
Brussels is the base for aviation maintenance at Brussels Airport and for many engineering and inspection offices. Aviation technicians use the Aircraft Hangar environment, and engineers and Level 3s use the platform to build and assign scenario sets for teams working elsewhere in the country.
Environments and methods that match Belgian work
Short answer: the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments match Flanders' port and chemical industry, the Aircraft Hangar matches Wallonia's aerospace sector and Brussels aviation, the Welding Workshop matches steel, offshore and construction work, and the NDT Lab covers fundamentals.
The simulator has five environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. The methods are grouped as surface (PT, MT, VT), volumetric (contact UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT), electromagnetic (ET, MFL) and three specialist techniques: LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS internal rotary UT for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification.
- Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs): weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. The core environment for Antwerp, Ghent, Feluy and Tertre.
- Storage Tank: UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Relevant to Antwerp's terminals and to LNG and product storage at Zeebrugge and elsewhere.
- Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs): airframe and component inspection. The core environment for Liège, Gosselies and Brussels aviation.
- Welding Workshop (52 jobs): weld coupons and fabrication joints. Relevant to steelworks maintenance, new plant construction, offshore wind foundations and metal fabrication across Wallonia and Flanders.
- NDT Lab (52 jobs): bench specimens and reference blocks. Relevant to trainees, students and quality staff building calibration and set-up skills.
Belgium's mix creates an unusual training challenge. A technician in Antwerp might spend years on plant inspection and never see an aerospace component, while a Liège technician may be expert in penetrant and eddy current on engine parts but rarely touch a corroded pipe. When people move between sectors, or when a company wins work outside its usual field, the simulator lets them build the unfamiliar skills before they arrive on the job. Belgium's nuclear history also illustrates why careful ultrasonic technique and interpretation matter: indications in thick sections must be set up, scanned and characterised consistently, and repetition in a safe environment helps build that discipline.
Regulators and requirements Belgian technicians meet
Short answer: Belgian NDT personnel are usually certified to EN ISO 9712, often through BANT, which also certifies aerospace NDT personnel to EN 4179 and NAS 410; radiation is regulated by FANC; and pressure equipment follows the PED and Belgian in-service rules. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme and is not a certification.
Personnel certification. BANT, the Belgian Association for Non-Destructive Testing, was founded in 1984 and runs personnel certification in two sectors: a metallic products sector for manufacturing and in-service testing to ISO 9712, and an aeronautic sector for Level 1 and 2 examination and certification to EN 4179 and NAS 410. Many Belgian technicians also hold certificates from other EN ISO 9712 bodies, such as PCN or certifications from neighbouring countries, because crews regularly work across borders. Some employers serving US-owned operators, US OEMs or EPCs on US-code projects also qualify staff to ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis training covers ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; Atlantis does not provide EN ISO 9712, BANT, EN 4179 or NAS 410 training or examinations.
Radiation protection. The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC, also known as AFCN) regulates ionising radiation in Belgium, including the authorisation of industrial radiography, and oversees the nuclear power plants together with its technical subsidiary Bel V. Industrial radiographers work under authorisations, radiation protection supervision and dosimetry requirements set by the Belgian radiation protection regulations. The simulator involves no radiation, so practising radiographic technique and interpretation in it needs none of these controls.
Pressure equipment and major hazards. New pressure equipment is placed on the market under the Belgian transposition of the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, while in-service rules for certain pressure equipment and steam installations require periodic examination by approved inspection bodies, with NDT often part of those examinations. Seveso sites, which are concentrated in the Antwerp and Ghent port areas, are subject to joint federal and regional major-accident inspections. If you are unsure which in-service regime applies to a specific item of equipment, confirm with the plant's approved inspection body.
Aviation and codes. Aviation maintenance is overseen by the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority under EASA rules, with NDT personnel controlled through Part-145 organisations' procedures. Codes in daily use include EN ISO weld testing standards, EN 13445 for pressure vessels, and ASME and API codes on US-specified plants and projects.
For written practices, procedures and audits for Belgian projects that work to US codes, see NDT Level III consulting in Belgium. To track BANT, EN ISO 9712, EN 4179 and ASNT certificates in one system, see the Atlantis ERP for Belgian inspection companies.
For trainees, working technicians and Level 3s in Belgium
Short answer: trainees build fundamentals with 33 guided lessons, working technicians refresh rare defects and less-used methods, and Level 3s and team leads benchmark crews objectively before turnarounds, outages and production campaigns.
Trainees. Belgian trainees come through technical secondary and higher education, welding and mechanical trades, aviation maintenance training and company programmes. The common problem is getting enough supervised hands-on time. The guided lessons start with calibration and reference blocks in the NDT Lab, progress to weld coupons, and then move to plant, tank and aircraft jobs. Each attempt is scored, so trainees can see their own progress.
Working technicians. Antwerp technicians may go from a cracker turnaround to a tank terminal to a construction project in a single season. Aerospace technicians may work one product line for months and then switch. The job library includes rare and hard-to-source flaws, from lack of fusion and transverse cracks in welds to tube wall loss at baffles, pitting under insulation and fatigue cracks around fastener holes, so technicians can practise the findings that matter before they meet them on a real asset.
Level 3s and team leads. A responsible Level 3 can build a scenario set for the work ahead, assign it to staff and incoming contractors, and compare results. That supports decisions on crew make-up and refresher training and shows whether a procedure is being interpreted consistently. For companies working in both Flanders and Wallonia, with staff certified under different schemes, a common practice set is a fair, neutral comparison.
Practice vs certification
Short answer: Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It does not grant BANT, EN ISO 9712, EN 4179, NAS 410 or ASNT certification, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens.
Every certification route used in Belgium requires documented training, supervised industrial experience and examinations, including a practical examination on real specimens. Under EN ISO 9712 that is handled by the certification body and its examination centres; in aerospace, by the certification body or the employer's responsible Level 3 according to EN 4179; under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, by the employer according to its written practice. Simulator practice is not counted as industrial experience by any of these schemes unless an employer's own procedures choose to recognise it, and Atlantis makes no claim that it is.
The value is in readiness. A candidate who has worked many virtual jobs goes into the practical exam knowing the set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing routine. A supervisor has objective evidence of progress. An experienced technician can warm up on a less-used method before a job. For formal ASNT SNT-TC-1A training, see Atlantis NDT training.
Two industries, two languages, one practice library: why Belgian teams practise virtually
Short answer: Belgium's NDT work is divided between sectors, regions and languages, crews often cross borders, and physical practice specimens are scarce. An online simulator gives every technician the same practice jobs wherever they are.
Belgium's inspection industry has to bridge differences. Flanders and Wallonia have different industrial profiles and different working languages, and many companies operate in both. Crews on an Antwerp turnaround might include technicians from the Netherlands, France and Germany alongside Belgians. Aerospace suppliers in Wallonia work to the requirements of several international customers. In that environment, a shared set of practice jobs that everyone can access online is one of the simplest ways to set a common standard.
The work is also campaign-driven. Chemical and refinery turnarounds, nuclear outages and aerospace production ramps all compress inspection into tight windows. When the window opens, there is no time for someone to learn a method they have not used in months. Practising beforehand, at home or at the office, keeps skills ready for when they are needed.
Like its neighbours, Belgium faces an ageing NDT workforce and growing demand from energy transition projects, offshore wind, new chemical capacity and nuclear long-term operation. Bringing new entrants up to speed faster and giving experienced staff a structured way to stay sharp is a practical response that does not depend on building new labs.
Simulator practice is also completely safe: no radiation, no confined spaces, no work at height and no hot work. Trainees learn from a score, not from an incident.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Belgium?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs online in a browser or app, so it can be used anywhere in Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels. Demos are arranged through the contact form.
Does Practical NDT count towards BANT or EN ISO 9712 certification?
No. BANT and other EN ISO 9712 certifications require training, industrial experience and examinations through the certification body. The simulator is practice only, and Atlantis does not provide BANT or EN ISO 9712 training or exams.
Is it useful for aerospace NDT in Liège and Charleroi?
Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs covering airframe and component inspection with ET, PT, UT and VT. It supports practice but does not replace EN 4179 or NAS 410 qualification.
Is it useful for Antwerp turnarounds?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site environment covers corrosion, weld, tube and screening jobs, including IRIS, PMI and LRUT, and the Storage Tank environment covers tank shell and floor inspection.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, focused on technique and interpretation. No radiation is involved, so FANC authorisation does not apply to simulator practice; real radiography remains regulated by FANC.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
Yes, as preparation. It builds set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing habits, but the exam must still be taken on real specimens under the relevant scheme.
Can it help with nuclear outage preparation at Doel or Tihange?
It supports general method practice, especially UT, PAUT and surface methods. Nuclear inspection relies on qualified techniques and personnel requirements that the simulator does not replace.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: trainees on guided lessons, working technicians refreshing methods and rare defects, and Level 3s who build and assign scenario sets.
Can Dutch, French or German contractors on a Belgian project use it?
Yes. Access is online, so everyone on a mixed crew can work the same scenario set before mobilisation, wherever they are based.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Belgium?
Yes, ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility for employers that need SNT-TC-1A personnel. See training.
How do we start?
