Work Order Management for Aerospace Quality Control
In the Atlantis NDT ERP, a field job is a team assignment linked to a project, and the work itself is recorded in NDT Reports. Technicians use an installable offline field app that works without signal, stores drafts and photos locally and syncs later. The app offers a method picker, photo capture, on-screen signature and PDF preview. Behind it, a REST API for field devices serves the jobs assigned to each technician and the equipment issued to them, and handles report submission and sync.
Reports capture the work order, request, WPS, contract and drawing numbers, the procedure and standard references, and method-specific data: UT with a probe calibration table, RT source, technique, IQI type and placement, MT technique and particle type, PT method and developer, PAUT focal laws, MFL scan mode and item lines, UTT readings by direction, and weld or job lines with defect type and orientation. Seventeen report types are available, each with its own numbering sequence.
Once synced, reports go through review and approval, and the assignment moves from in field to submitted and then closed.
The aerospace quality control workflow
In aerospace NDT, a single lapsed vision test or an uncontrolled technique sheet can become an audit finding against the whole shop. The Atlantis NDT ERP puts dated, signed records behind each step: certification status computed automatically, procedure revisions locked once approved, calibration certificates stored per serial number, and reports signed by inspector, reviewer and approver. Timesheets warn if a technician logs work while a certificate is not valid.
Keep the module scope separate from sector-specific configuration. Demonstrate the required records and approval steps using a representative job before agreeing the implementation.
Records and controls to evaluate
- Installable offline field app that works without signal and syncs later
- Method picker, photo capture, on-screen signature and PDF preview
- REST API for field devices: jobs assigned to me, equipment issued to me, report submission and sync
- 17 report types (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ECT, IRIS, PAUT, MFL, TOFD, PWHT, PMI, Hardness, UTT, Ferrite, Holiday/coating, CR)
- Method-specific fields such as RT IQI type and placement, MT particle type, PT developer and PAUT focal laws
- Weld and job lines with defect type and orientation
- Work order, request, WPS, contract and drawing references
- Team assignment status from dispatched through in field, submitted and closed
Follow the work from start to finish
The coordinator dispatches the crew through Team Assignments. Before leaving signal, the technician's app downloads the jobs assigned to them and the equipment issued to them. On site, they pick the method, fill in the report, take photos and sign on screen, all offline. When the device reconnects, drafts and photos sync. The reviewer checks the report, the approver signs, and the PDF is produced using the company template for that method.
The assignment moves to submitted, then closed, and approved timesheet hours feed invoicing.
Check the evidence, permissions and handover
The biggest source of delay and error in NDT reporting is re-keying: paper field sheets typed up at the office days later. The offline field app captures method-specific data at the point of inspection, including photos and signatures, even inside a vessel or on a remote right-of-way with no coverage. Because the data model matches each method, the reviewer sees IQI placement for RT, particle type for MT or focal laws for PAUT in the right fields rather than in free-text notes.
During the trial, ask one user to create a record and another to review it. Make a correction, check which version a customer receives, and export the final record with its references. Record any manual steps or configuration gaps in the acceptance checklist.
Software organises evidence; it does not grant personnel certification, laboratory accreditation or customer approval. Confirm the requirements that apply to your work with the responsible technical or quality manager.
Questions about work order management
Does the field app work with no mobile signal?
Yes. It is an installable offline app that stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs when a connection is available.
Which NDT methods have their own report type?
Seventeen: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ECT, IRIS, PAUT, MFL, TOFD, PWHT, PMI, Hardness, UT thickness, Ferrite, Holiday/coating and Computed Radiography, each with its own numbering sequence.
Can the client's inspector sign the report?
Yes. Reports record a third-party or authorised inspector name and signature alongside the inspector, reviewer and approver.
Choose the next step
Request the 14-day ERP trial to work through a representative job. Use the integration scoping guide for external systems: a REST API connection needs an agreed data mapping, implementation and test plan.
