Pipeline Corrosion and Mechanical Damage: Define the Inspection Inputs
Corrosion and mechanical damage can coexist at the same pipeline location, but they are not interchangeable findings. An assessment may need wall thickness, surface condition, dent geometry and crack-sensitive examination. The integrity engineer should define which evidence is needed for the decision.
Establish the location and history
Tie the work to a stable pipeline reference and record the material, dimensions and relevant service information available. Review earlier in-line or direct examination results without assuming that their locations and sizing conventions are identical.
For an exposed site, the owner must establish excavation, access and operating controls. The NDT scope should identify what surface preparation is permitted and who authorises further work.
Measure each condition on a suitable basis
A thickness survey can characterise wall loss within its coverage and resolution. It does not automatically assess a crack associated with a gouge or dent. A geometric survey likewise describes shape but does not establish fracture resistance.
Agree the measurement grid or scan coverage, reference checks and coordinate system. Preserve the raw data and record areas that could not be examined. A single minimum reading can hide the shape and extent needed for engineering review.
Hand over findings without a generic safe-life claim
Report each condition and the relationships between them, with dimensions, orientation and examination limits. The responsible pipeline integrity authority should select the applicable assessment method and decide on operating restrictions, repair or monitoring. Atlantis NDT can discuss the inspection evidence; a remaining-life or fitness-for-service calculation requires a separately defined engineering scope.
