Digital Twin or Spreadsheet? Build an Inspection Business Case

A digital twin is worth evaluating when asset context changes how a team uses its inspection records. A spreadsheet can remain a reasonable choice for a small, controlled register. The business case should identify an operational problem and measure whether the proposed system solves it.

Measure the current work

Choose a representative inspection package and time the tasks that recur: finding the asset, matching a report to its location, reconciling revisions and preparing a review. Record how often the task occurs and which staff perform it. Include rework only where there is evidence; do not start with an assumed percentage saving.

Distinguish time that can actually be redeployed from small fragments that will not change staffing or throughput. A faster screen is useful, but it does not automatically create a cash saving.

Compare the full cost

Include data preparation, asset identifiers, model preparation, hosting, licences, training, administration and interfaces. Separate one-time implementation from recurring cost. If a model must be updated after a modification, identify who does that work and budget for it.

For a simple scenario, annual benefit equals evidenced time saved multiplied by the relevant labour cost, plus other independently justified benefits. Subtract recurring cost before considering recovery of the initial investment. Test low, expected and high cases rather than presenting one precise forecast.

Run a bounded trial

Use a real asset and a defined set of reports. Ask users to find a prior indication, compare revisions and export a handover package. Record failures, manual steps and time taken. Keep the decision criteria agreed in advance. Atlantis can discuss digital-twin scope and integrations; an assumed platform capability should be demonstrated before it enters the financial model.

Put the numbers to work

A calculator gives you an estimate. A digital twin keeps the inspection data, damage and history for every asset in one place.
