Electrical and Arc-Flash Safety in an NDT Laboratory
An NDT qualification does not, by itself, qualify someone to work on electrical equipment. Magnetic-particle benches, industrial radiography equipment and ordinary laboratory power supplies need electrical controls appropriate to the task and installation.
Define the work before opening equipment
Separate normal operation, cleaning and maintenance from fault finding inside an enclosure. Identify who controls the equipment and who is authorised to isolate, test or repair it. Do not make an improvised repair merely because an inspection job is waiting.
OSHA’s electrical guidance addresses de-energisation, lockout and verification by qualified people. A switch in the off position is not sufficient evidence that an installation is safe. The site’s electrical programme must determine the applicable isolation and protective measures.
Include inspection-specific conditions
Wet-process benches, damaged lamp cables, temporary extensions and trailing leads deserve attention during the laboratory risk review. Arrange the workspace so liquid handling and component movement do not damage electrical connections. Remove suspect equipment from use and identify it clearly so another shift does not reconnect it.
The electrical assessment should also consider stored energy and equipment that has more than one supply. This article is a planning guide, not an instruction for testing live circuits or selecting protective clothing.
Make the handover explicit
Keep the equipment identifier, fault description, isolation responsibility and repair record together. Before returning a unit to NDT service, confirm both its electrical release and the method-specific performance checks required by the approved procedure. Electrical repair and inspection-system verification answer different questions; retain evidence of both.
References and next steps
OSHA’s electric-arc flash guidance provides further background. Use the governing specification and approved procedure for the actual job.
Discuss the examination scope. Identify the NDT equipment and inspection requirements. Electrical work must remain with the site’s qualified electrical personnel.
