Acoustic Emission (AE) Requirements Under ISO/IEC 17025
Sensor coupling is verified on the structure itself before and after the test, and loading conditions form part of the procedure because the method depends on stimulating the flaw. ISO/IEC 17025, enforced by Developed under ISO's Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO).: ISO/IEC 17025 requires competence but prescribes no certification scheme. Clause 6.
An auditor examining AE asks for sensors, preamplifiers, couplant and the calibration source used to verify sensor response in situ. ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the third edition, sets general requirements for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of laboratories. It is structured as general requirements covering impartiality and confidentiality, then structural, resource, process and management system requirements, with Clause 8 offering Option A — a set of built-in management system requirements — or Option B, an ISO 9001-conforming system. For an NDT provider the practical consequence is that accreditation is granted method by method: the scope of accreditation names each technique rather than asserting general competence. A2LA accredits NDT under ISO/IEC 17025 for testing laboratories and ISO/IEC 17020 for inspection bodies, with an optional additional assessment to ASTM E543 or ASTM E1212.

Does ISO/IEC 17025 require a separate procedure for AE?
Yes. Every method in scope needs its own written procedure, approved by someone qualified in that method, describing technique, equipment, calibration, scanning or coverage, acceptance criteria and reporting. A single combined "NDT procedure" covering several methods is a finding under every regime that names procedures individually.
Who can approve a AE procedure under ISO/IEC 17025?
A Level III qualified in AE. Because ISO/IEC 17025 accepts employer-based certification, that Level III may be contracted rather than employed — but their own qualification must cover AE, and an auditor will check that before accepting the signature.
What AE records does a ISO/IEC 17025 audit sample?
The approved procedure, the technician's AE certification on the date of work, and the equipment evidence — sensors, preamplifiers, couplant and the calibration source used to verify sensor response in situ. The auditor works backwards from a finished job, so every item has to reconcile with the report and its stated acceptance criteria.
What is the most common AE finding at audit?
Sensor response not verified after the test, so a failed sensor invalidates the coverage. It is a records failure rather than a technique failure — the examination was performed correctly and the evidence supporting it cannot be produced, which under ISO/IEC 17025 is recorded the same way as not having done the work.
Can a technician certified elsewhere perform AE under ISO/IEC 17025?
Not automatically. Employer-based certification ends when the holder leaves, so the new employer must certify them under its own written practice. Prior training and documented experience transfer as evidence; the certificate itself does not.
What equipment evidence does AE need under ISO/IEC 17025?
Calibration status traceable to the day of use, covering the instrument and its accessories — probes, cables, blocks and reference standards for ultrasonics; sources and densitometers for radiography. An in-calibration instrument with an out-of-calibration reference block fails the same way as an uncalibrated one.
How do AE requirements differ from the other methods in ISO/IEC 17025?
Scope, qualification and evidence are method-specific, so the differences are real rather than administrative. ISO/IEC 17025 also covers PT — visible, fluorescent, RT — X-ray (digital and/or film), gamma (digital and/or film), MT — prod, yoke and bench, visible or fluorescent, wet or dry, UT — contact straight beam, contact angle beam, immersion straight beam, immersion angle beam, immersion phased array, ET, and each carries its own procedure, its own personnel qualification and its own equipment evidence.
Personnel certification for AE
ISO/IEC 17025 requires competence but prescribes no certification scheme. Clause 6.2 requires documented competence requirements plus procedures and records for selecting, training, supervising, authorising and monitoring personnel — and clause 6.2.5 is a recurring deficiency in published A2LA assessment data. An employer-based SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 programme satisfies it, so an outsourced Level III can own the competence criteria, approve the NDT procedures and authorise technicians, and a laboratory can be accredited without a single third-party-certified individual. That changes only where a method on the scope, or the customer's specification, calls for ISO 9712 certification instead.
