The situation

The client inspects welds on LNG facilities in Qatar, where contractor procedures are typically reviewed before work is released. Its ultrasonic weld inspection procedure needed to be brought into line with the code editions now in force.

A procedure that cites a superseded edition is an easy rejection at document review, and it can hold up a job before a single weld is scanned.

What we did

Atlantis NDT reviewed the procedure against three current documents and reissued it as Revision 1:

  • AWS D1.1:2025, the Structural Welding Code for steel.
  • The 2025 edition of the ASME code.
  • ASNT SNT-TC-1A, 2024 edition, for personnel qualification and certification.

What a code-edition update involves

An edition update is more than changing the year on the cover. This is the checklist Atlantis works through on any procedure revision of this kind; it describes the method, not the client's document.

  • Edition references on the cover, in the scope and in the reference list.
  • Clause, table and figure numbers, which move between editions even when the requirement does not.
  • Acceptance criteria and where they come from for each type of joint and loading.
  • Calibration, reference blocks and sensitivity settings.
  • Scanning technique, coverage and recording levels.
  • Personnel qualification wording, tied to the employer's written practice under the current SNT-TC-1A edition.
  • Revision history, review and approval, so the reader can see what changed and who approved it.

What the client received

A Revision 1 procedure that cites the current editions of AWS D1.1, the ASME code and SNT-TC-1A, reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III.

If your procedures are due a revision

  • List which code editions your clients now specify, and check each procedure's reference list against them.
  • Revise before the next job submission, not after a rejection.
  • Keep the revision history honest: what changed, why, and who approved it.
