A boiler pressure part, a turbine component and a structural support should not receive the same generic inspection specification. Start with the component and the decision the outage team must make.

Build the scope from service experience

Review operating history, previous findings, repairs and relevant recommendations from the responsible engineering or equipment authority. Identify the degradation concern for each location. Keep a distinction between a suspected mechanism and a condition already established by evidence.

Agree examination timing around access, cleaning and other outage tasks. A technique that requires an exposed surface cannot be assumed to cover an area that remains insulated or obstructed.

Demonstrate the examination capability

Choose the method and technique for the material, expected condition and geometry. Record the procedure, reference arrangement and personnel requirements. Specialised components may need manufacturer-specific or owner-approved practices; a generic ASME or ASTM list does not establish compliance.

State the limits of the examination, including unexamined regions and conditions that affect data quality. Resolve unacceptable coverage before the component becomes inaccessible again.

Give the outage team a usable handover

Use component and location identifiers that match the maintenance system. Separate immediately reportable findings, completed examinations and pending follow-up. Link repair and re-examination records without overwriting the original result. The owner’s authorised engineering team determines disposition and return to service; the inspection report should make that decision traceable.

References and next steps

ASNT’s overview of NDT methods provides further background.
