Finding a discontinuity is only one part of the work: the team must also prevent inspection materials or equipment from contaminating the process and establish who releases the equipment back to production.

Agree the maintenance boundary

Identify food-contact surfaces, adjacent production and the approved shutdown or isolation arrangements. Ask the owner which cleaning, access and material controls apply. Bring the maintenance, quality and food-safety teams into the planning where their responsibilities overlap.

Record the inspection materials proposed for the job, including cleaners and couplants. Do not assume that a product acceptable for a workshop examination is suitable for this location or product stream.

Select a method for the actual condition

Visual examination may identify surface damage, weld profile concerns or inaccessible cleaning features. Suitable penetrant examination can address surface-breaking discontinuities, while ultrasonic techniques may answer particular wall or weld questions. Method selection must account for material, geometry, access and the owner’s restrictions.

A method cannot establish general hygienic suitability merely because no reportable indication was found. Surface finish, cleanability and microbiological release are separate assessments.

Close the job with two clear decisions

The inspection report should identify examined locations, methods, findings and limitations. The maintenance record should document any repair and required follow-up. The owner’s authorised team then confirms cleaning and return-to-production requirements. Retain those decisions separately so an NDT result is not mistaken for a food-safety release.

References and next steps

ASNT’s overview of NDT methods provides further background. Use the governing specification and approved procedure for the actual job.

Discuss the examination scope. Include the component, material, service history and decision the inspection needs to support.

","updatedAt":"2026-10-12T00:00:00Z"}
