The WPS tells production how to weld within an authorised range. The PQR records the conditions and results of a procedure qualification test. A welder or operator qualification concerns the person’s demonstrated performance within its qualified range.

Start with the governing construction requirements

ASME Section IX addresses qualification of procedures and personnel. Establish why it applies to the work and which edition the contract or governing code invokes. A qualification document alone does not establish every production-weld examination or acceptance requirement.

Before a job starts, compare the proposed production variables with the WPS and its supporting qualification basis. Resolve gaps through the responsible welding authority rather than changing a document after fabrication.

Keep the evidence traceable

Give each WPS a controlled identity and revision. Link the supporting PQR without rewriting the original test conditions to match a later production preference. Record the test reports and required approvals so a reviewer can follow the qualification evidence.

For a welder, maintain the qualification scope and applicable continuity records. A certificate photograph with no process, range or supporting record does not give a planner enough information to allocate the work.

Connect the dossier to the actual weld

The production record should identify the joint, drawing, material, WPS revision and welder or operator. Link subsequent NDT to that same joint identity. If a weld is repaired, preserve the original result and repair history instead of overwriting the first report. This makes a later review of fabrication and examination much more reliable.

References and next steps

ASME’s Section IX qualification overview provides further background.
